Hi Guys does anyone know if you can just get a timing belt itself for a 2000 2l mazda 626 diesel or do you have to get a whole timing belt kit??

You should always be able to just buy the belt, by kit do you mean with pulleys and water pump?
Why? Did you already replace the other parts?

no was just told that you should always replace the water pump etc when changing the timing belt and they came in a timing belt kit. (which appears to be super expensive)I was kinda wondering is this a necessity?

The reason for the kit is that the timing belt is such a big job that you might as well get the water (coolant) pump and the pulleys replaced so you don't have to do them separately 1/2 years down the road*

    *pun!
