Is it possible to compress avi files using my mac?

Ive tried the "compress file" option but this only reduces file size from 235 to 230mb. I need the file less than 200mb.... any help appreciated.

never tried it actually but I'd try Handbrake or ffmpeg. Both are free. I doubt you could compress it, it would be re encoded so there would be quality drop off.

Yeah, you can compress an AVI movie somewhat using a more efficient codec. Its not an ideal option though, because you are starting out with something that is already low quality. Its much better if you can get your hands on the source (ie DVD or whatever) and re-encode from scratch.

If you are new to video encoding then Handbrake is a simple tool (there is a Mac version).

You want to use H.264 High-Profile. The higher the settings, the better compression you'll achieve (although it is a law of diminishing returns, so best to just go with the High Profile preset). Put in your desired size, and make sure you give it a 2-pass encode.
