Next Gen iPhone

Even though there was no announcements regarding the iPhone, the iPad actually states where the phone might be heading.

Given that what they showed with the iPad is what will ship in April its now highly unlikely any features such as multitasking or flash will be coming to the iPhone for the next release (June?). I would guess the background wallpaper feature to become standard as many jailbreak just to customise.

Anyone else got any guesses of what we should expect?

I don't agree that the features you've mentioned won't appear. I reckon the 4.0 update may be similar to the 3.0 in terms o announcement/release (march and june). It may bring in multitasking (possibly just for the 3gs, iPad and new iPhone due to battery and processor issues). The wallpaper feature may well appear in 4.0 for iPhones.

Flash is a standard, and Apple don't really like embracing standards, so don't hold your breath for that.

In terms of what to expect, only Apple know and anything else is a rumour. Unless the rumour came leaked from an employee, a supplier to Apple, or a well known and trusted analyst, it is likely to have no basis.

What I would like, however, is a different story! Personally I think the best thing they could do is give the iPhone the aluminium case the iPad has, even if it does mean having a plastic bit on it for good 3G signal. Some will say this won't happen as they tried that first and have moved away, but that was pre-unibody days and I reckon it could appear. A better camera, better battery, processor, screen and software (4.0) are on the way in the next gen iPhone I reckon. This is based on analysing numerous rumours and Apple trends over the last 4-5 years, and I know I have just gone against what I said about baseless rumours from randomers!!

Any way, thats what I reckon. You?

802.11a/b/g/n, GSM/3G, H264, ePub, AAC, MP3, PDF, HTML5? I'd say the opposite. Or to be more precise, they like to embrace non-proprietary standards.

where in that does it say they don't embrace them?

FYI, they have shunned flash when they have been asked about it saying its not the way forward, which I'm inclined to agree with, but I still feel it should be in there.

That's their decision. It's their device. I really don't get this hoopla about Flash anyway. If someone wants Flash, they're completely free to pick up an Android/Windows-based tablet.

I completely agree. I have an iPhone and have numerous other Apple devices, plan on upgrading my iPhone to the next one and also am getting a tablet. I rarely can't do something vital on the iPhone due to the lack of flash, but there is often times when it would be nice. I have spoken to programers and developers and they all agree it isn't that hard to incorporate, and for that reason, I think they should have, purely for complete across the board computability. From another angle, if they want to own the market (which I know they practically do) they should make it compatible with everything possible, and flash is possible, even if it is possibly on the way out.

Fair points. If they ever do include it, I would hope it's disabled by default. I doubt we'll ever see it, though - it competes in too many areas with Apple's stores (games, video and to a lesser extent, music).

not sure it competes in games, flash games are a bit 3-4 years ago. no?

Apple don't want flash because it allows content distributors to circumvent their App Store ecosystem.

Anyway, all I know about the next iPhone is that it will probably have an Apple branded core licensed from ARM, like the iPad's A4.

Ver very good point, haven't heard that mentioned before, but it's right on the money IMO.

No flash ads in Safari. I love that they're disabled in MobileSafari.

I don't think so. Take a game like Canabalt - free to use on the web with Flash, a top selling paid app in the App Store at one stage.

forgot about that, pretty handy alright.

Don't have a major amount of experience with flash games etc, just noticed they're not as big as they used to be.

The main thing I would like to see in the next iPhone is multitasking. Id love to be able to listen to the radio while browsing the web or playing a game. There's talk of video chat coming to the next iPhone which I could see happening but it wouldnt bother me if it had it or not.

Thankfully we are seeing the end of exclusivity deals between Apple and the Operators so hopefully we will see the iPhone on more networks and more competitive prices.

A 64GB one with a radio would be the icing om the cake too.

only reason i'd want flash its to watch online media.

some sites use quicktime if they notice that your UA is mobile safari.

youtube are testing using html 5 to deliver their media. this is the future i think. with media coming over html 5 90% of my flash needs will be met and i won't actually want flash.

Still dont see why Apple would introduce multitasking a month or so after releasing a product. If they had intentions to have it in the iPhone OS they would definitely have shown it off in the iPad launch.

I'm not saying it will never happen but worrying for the next iPhone release.

you can listen to the radio if your willing to use your data, most radio app's have a listen in background option through safari. eats data from my experience.

A 64 with radio would be sweet, ad in an aluminium back and we're away :)

definitely agree and hope HTML5 is the future.

I agree that they would probably have shown it off, but maybe its just not ready properly yet at all? just my thoughts

True but it is reasonable to expect OS 4.0 being released this year, and if it is the iPad will be getting OS 4.0 too.

Multitasking might be the major announcement of OS 4.0, so Apple probably waited to announce 4.0 at a different time in a different event.

Anyone considering the purchase of an iPhone might like to consider waiting a while. A report on Mac Rumors stated that Steve Jobs reportedly had a town hall style meeting after the launch of the iPad, and one comment he made was that the next iPhone would be an A+ upgrade. He also said he thought Google was trying to kill the iPhone so obviously the gloves are off.

In relation to Flash, SJ also made some comments which would seem to rule out Flash ever being on the iPhone or iPad. talking about html5 is rather academic, as most iPhones currently in users hands will be landfill by the time any appreciable proportion of Flash content on the Web has been replaced by html5.

great find! I reckon most in this thread wouldn't be considering getting a current gen? Maybe it'd be a handy thread in itself in this forum and/or Vodafone/o2, just to help anyone looking for advice on buying?

The iPad can do 140 Hours of music playback with the screen off using their custom processors. We should be seeing these processors in the next gen iPhones/iPod Touches.

Its a widly believed conspiracy that Apple don't include flash support for video beacuse of their deal with Google and the Youtube app.

You are not going to see a 25 wh battery in the next iPhone :D but the new chip should provide improved efficiencies and performance.

I think Steve Jobs' reported comments are more likely to be the truth.

"As for Adobe, Jobs said they are lazy and Jobs blames Adobe for a buggy implementation of Flash on the Mac as one of the reasons they won't support it.
Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy, he says. Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it's because of Flash."

Thats because of the battery required to power the 9.7 inch display for 10 hours. TDP will be the same for the next version of the iPhone as the 3GS.
