hi a few questions for ye about chain cleaning that i have been pondering for a while.

do you put degreaser into the bottom bracket? or is this harmful if not what is a good way of cleaning this bit as it can get kind of squeaky..

do you put degreaser into the casette or just clean it and degrease the chain

what is a better lube spray or putty?

oh,, and disc brakes...is pharmacy pure alcohol ok to clean disc brakes?

    thanks !!:)

Do not put degreaser into your BB and if you really feel the need to clean the cassette, make sure none of it goes near your hub!

 No, definitely not, keep degreaser away from any bearings that you don't intend to open and service: headset, wheel hubs, bottom bracket.

Finish Line dry is a very good lubricant, I don't think a wax is really worth it for our climate and muddy roads.

As for cleaning pads, just use warm water, getting in there with alcohol and a q-tip isn't necessary.

There are lots of good resources for cleaning: here and here.

My tip would be: be efficient. Your bike will get dirty many time more in the future, cleaning it now on a microscopic level might seem like a good idea, but it's time consuming. Know which parts to keep clean for function, grease the chain, keep the frame relatively clean for inspection and at the end of the season strip the whole thing down and get in there with the q-tips.

I bought "gunk" in Halfords. I don't really recommend it, it's pretty good, but it's quite hard to dispose of (lots of diluting). I think engine degreaser is a bit too hardcore.

I find Pedros citrus degreaser just as good, maybe more expensive but it's clean and is good for the environment if that's your bag.

There are plenty but I'm not familiar with many. Consort Motor Factors in Drumcondra (just up from the Tolka bridge) should have some...

I use the Wax lubeand have done for the past year, I find it extremely good, even so in the wet. I chose to do this as I store and use the bike indoors (on rollers) and was fed up with getting grease on everything. With the wax it washes off the carpet etc without any problems, so at least 'er indoors is happy!

I just use diesel on the chain and cassette and rinse em in soapy water - perfect job.

I use Finishline Ecotech 2 Multi Degreaser ( catchy name innit ). Great stuff though, eco friendly and very effective.

I use it in a Park chain scrubber jobby, pour it into an glass jar afterwards and all the crap sinks to the bottom, so you can use most of it again.

Then just wash the chain though with water and whatever shampoo/detergent and the chain is like new.

It comes as an aerosol, a 495ml bottle or a Gallon Drum.

I get the gallon but the bottle will do you if you're just checking it out. The spray would be pretty wasteful I reckon, might be ok for spraying on the cassette but forget it for the chain and chainrings.

Get yourself one of these :

    and one of these :

    and you should be set.

CRC do a deal for the chain cleaner and the brush, along with a bottle of citrus degreaser as I recall.
