Hows it going, Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but i had a question i thought a few of you might be able to help me out with.

im meant to be purchasing a van tommorow, and it is taxed until april, but the DOE is out, and was wondering if i pick it up, can i insure it without the DOE being done?

Theres a crack in the windscreen, so id have to replace the windscreen before it has to pass the DOE, but its not too bad, so i was hoping that i wouldnt have to replace the screen until the tax runs out and need to get a new DOE cert.

Im a bit new to this commercial stuff, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Ben

You can insure it but you will not be able to tax it.

It is technically illegal to drive a van on the road without a valid DOE, similar to it being technically illegal to drive a car on the road without a valid NCT (if due).

It might happen frequently, but if stopped you could be in trouble.

I'd be questioning why someone is selling a van without a valid DOE - might be more wrong than just a cracked windscreen.

Wear and tear on a van can be high, due to constant stopping and starting and clocking up big miles in short periods. The owner may not be the regular driver so it may be driven hard. I have two vans that failed the doe first time on emissions. Lots of short journeys caused carbon deposits to build up.

My advice is buy a van with a recent doe, theres plenty out there

Unless you/mate has gone over the van and are satisfied that the screen is the only problem ...theres no problem, but if seller says thats the reason for no DOE i'd walk away.....A dealer will generally fix tings up for a test even if it means a little extra on the price....
