    Ok people,

Brother works in Tesco Head Office...

They recieved prices 2day for the ipad.

He told me 2 prices. ( i assume they are for the 16gb models)

    €529.99 & €699(3G)

He said the 3G apparently needs an extra "chip of some sort" to work in Europe but i couldnt see why so.

So ye notin official so dont be surprised to see different prices .
For all we know tat could be the price the company gets them at.

But ye ..... Who thinks the price is worth it for "a big i podtouch"?

The AT&T 3G network in the USA uses different bands to those in Europe, as shown by the Nexus One (T-Mobile USA) 3G working in Europe but not on AT&T.

So, if accurate, nearly 200 quid more than in the US? Screw that, time to buy in US or up north depending on their pricing.

Do Tesco even sell Apple gear?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭jd83

Not planning on buying myself an oversized ipod touch with no multitasking, webcam or usb. But I ordered my phone from the u.s on www.myusabox.com and got it forwarded to ireland. So if you want to avoid the inevitable paddy tax they put on it when they sell it here you can use that. They will even stick a fake invoice in with a lower price.

That's not consistent with how they price other products in euros vs. dollars. E.g. €929 or $999 for the basic MacBook. I don't see why the pricing on this thing would be different.

Still dearer than the american change over price...so there really must be something to be added in to make them work over here.

Good point... I think they just want the people who would be like " SOMETHING NEW!! " and get them to buy it.

But ye i was annoyed how the ceo said its " way better than a labtop"

Prices listed in the States never include Sales Tax as it varies per state (some have none).

    Cheapest iPad $499 (plus Tax)
    €360 + 21% VAT = €435.60
    plus Paddy Tax = €499??

I thought it was T-Mobile in the states that had the custom band 1700Mhz??

Thats why unlocked iPhone wont work with T-Mobile.

Disappointed with several features webcam / sd slot / usb / multitasking but they will still sell in massive numbers.

The device will shine when specific apps are developed and I do understand why apple does not want to make this a slimed down laptop like some of those crappy xp netbooks.

Will wait until I get to see one in action, but looks like a purchase to me.

they generally drop them a little bit so it doesn't seem like they just swapped the symbol, I'd say based on that we're looking at €449...

    I'm guessing between €469 and €499.

Have people used this a lot before. Is it safe, does it work?

Apple webpage is now saying July 23rd and 499 Euro's
starting price. there was some snippet on some tv3/3e program earlier today but I missed it. (Must have only been a quck mention as I only went for a wee and when I came back I missed the mention of the ipads and priceing)

    Cheers !

So these appear to be at about parity with the UK then ?

I imagine there'll be much wailing & gnashing of teeth over on adverts.ie; it'll cut out some of the gouging that's been going on.

Depending what sort of quantities are going to be available it could actually fuel fresh gouging.

Apple usually update the store on a Tuesday, so pre-orders could start tomorrow. But given the already limited supplies (US and UK stores still put availability at 7-10 business days) they may forgo pre-orders altogether and wait until Friday.

Are people expecting the 3g versions to be subsidised by the networks if you sign up to a 12/18month data plan?

Don't think thats how it works in US / UK, doubt it would be the same here. Maybe a small discount because CPW subsidise netbooks now don't they?

Just was looking at the Komplett website and they have the 16GB wifi only iPad for €759. The prices for the 3G models look just as crazy !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 Pringles

Komplett has the 64 Gb wifi + 3G iPad at €1,269.00. Maybe they will change their prices on Friday. They have 0 units on stock anyway.

Do you guys not get it? Apple could easily have brought out an iPad with all of the features we would ever want - but what would they do after that? They very purposely stage the new technologies that they release to keep interest and demand, and also milk every last penny out of the millions of Apple fanboys who will go out and buy every single new version of their products.

This sums it up pretty well..

Or maybe, just maybe, they put in enough to keep it at a reasonable purchase price level? As they sell enough and get the suppliers down on the component prices they can add in features for the same money? Or would that not suit the apple-haters? Hasn't the HP slate got everything in it but the kitchen sink?...Oh wait.....
