After the fanfare of the 3 strikes policy & the blocking of thepiratebay I wonder if anyone has actually received one of these warning letters.

Was it just speech play to appease the record companies or is there any true teeth behind it all ?.

It could be of course that all illegal downloading has ceased in Ireland.:D:D:D

    No nobody has received anything,

Mod Warning: I don't want this turning into some discussion of where, what or how to obtain copyright material.

Absolutely agree, I am only trying to ascertain if eircom had acted on their threat.

To date there's been nothing reported either by users on sites like boards.ie or the media

I would think if they did send out letters, IRMA would be so worked up about it they'd send copies of the letters to the press to announce what they were doing. Theyre all about the profile of the campaign.

...any chance you could post quackers link for GOOD PORN? Ive always wanted a reason to start my day off by saying "GOOD PORNING" to my colleagues in work. His link would allow me to do that. My BAD, EXCELLENT and GREAT PORN links currently dont afford me that opportunity.

    :D

bad porn vs excellent porn? depends what you mean by "bad"!
That eircom thing is a joke, block piratebay when everyone can just get the torrents off anyone else with vf/bt etc. Its all just a show to keep everyone happy.

I'm pretty sure some hundreds of people have received their first warning.

Another prime example of why old threads should not be revived, you get people "correcting" year old statements simply because things have moved on.

Since this is still a current topic, I'm not going to close this, but people need to note that this thread is 9 months old. No more correcting statements that were true then but are not now.

Are the warning letters sent out if you are tracked using torrents/ peer 2 peer ? What if you use a more elaborate form of download using products beginning with the letter 'R' , 'M' or 'H' ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,024 ✭✭✭✭ShaneU

As far as I know it's only torrents they're monitoring.

How much is it costing Eircom to monitor downloads?-in France where a similar scheme is in place the cost per look-up on infringing users is 8.50 euro, that'd work out pretty expensive monitoring every suspected infringer on the Eircom network. For a company in such a financial mess does it make sense to pay out so much money to catch alleged infringers?

I'm only going to say this once, for the people who haven't been following the other threads on this, no discussion of what you can use to download copyright material and avoid penalty. Next post is a ban, simple as that.

There is no way for us to know what is being monitored, but I have seen reports of warnings given to people who downloaded from file hosting sites (not relating to the eircom/IRMA agreement). Also, EIRCOM ARE NOT MONITORING ANYTHING, I don't know how many times that has to be said, but there it is again. They are simply a point of contact between the people who do the monitoring and you.

As pointed out elsewhere Eircom are not monitoring anyone and do you really think that they want to be spending time and money in this way:rolleyes:

Maybe I should have rephrased my post-Eircom send out the warning letters so their network is obviously being monitored and somebody has to pay for that.Third party companies are employed to monitor downloads etc. for infringements on isp's networks and they don't do it for free.

And again I ask you do you really think that Eircom want to be using resourses to be doing this?

Record industry is paying the third party companies, as they are the ones who are engaging them.

One of the the reasons Eircom went for the current solution is to avoid having to charge subs for implementation of monitoring via Audible Magic

Nice to see record companies investing their money wiseley-churn out a huge amount of rubbish music instead of investing in decent up and coming bands who embrace file sharing to get their music out to the masses.
No matter what money is thrown at the problem of copyright infringing there will always be ways to cicumvent whatever measures are taken to stop illegal downloads.

So you are making the blindingly obvious remark that people will always want music for nothing?

And how in that wonderful model will there be any money to invest in new music of any type?

It is quite extraordinary in all of these "people will get around it anyway" type remarks how the rights of copyright holders are flagrantly ignored as if free entertainment was now an entitlement and to hell with the law.

It's their money to do with as they wish. Do you have a burglar alarm? If so, how dare you spend your money on something to stop others from stealing your property. You see how that works? All though downloading isn't the same as stealing physical property, people (record industry and individuals) are still entitled to spend their own money to protect their property, whether that be physical or intellectual property.

People will do what people will do, but that's neither here nor there, and this part of the discussion stops right here.

Fair enough-rant over, back on topic-are there any figures of how many letters have actually been sent out or is Eircom just doing enough to keep IRMA happy,I know IRMA wanted a huge amount of letters sent each month to infringers but I doubt that target is being reached otherwise we'd have heard a lot more about it.

I know of nobody who has gotten a letter from them i think they are bluffing about all this internet monitoring just to scare ya's all...havnt heard of one person getting a letter as of yet

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,713 ✭✭✭✭jor el

You may want to read a little more, there are at least 2 posters on this forum that have received warnings, and one even posted the letter up. The warnings are happening, it is not a bluff, and I've no doubt that it will lead to disconnections at some point.
