More Irish Rail idiotic pricing

Seems to me the lunatics are running the asylum
Madam, – Shortly before Christmas I went to purchase a day return ticket to Drogheda. The sales assistant at Connolly station in Dublin was kind enough to inform me that a day return to Drogheda would cost €22 or I could purchase a day return to Newry costing €10 and simply alight at Drogheda. You can guess which I opted for.

I am glad to see Irish Rail doing its bit for cross-Border shopping! – Yours, etc,

    ALLAN J CRANN,

    Wilson’s Place, Dublin 2.

I think something similar was discussed here last year. If I remember correctly they sell you the €10 ticket on condition you actually go to Newry instead of getting off at an intermediate station. If your Newry ticket is inspected in Drogheda they might consider you not to have a valid ticket and land you with a fine.

Yeah, the fare is explicitly point to point. Theres justifications for it, but they don't make much sense.

Theres also a good chance the ticket inspector wouldn't know it was a promo fare!

They discussed this letter on another forum. Under IR bye laws you can't use a cheaper ticket to a further destination in place of a more expensive one to a closer destination (which in itself is an admission that they fúck up fares, and so want a get out of jail card for when they do).

However, as the journey to Newry is international it's acceptable under EU law to break it up by getting out at Drogheda.

The EUR 10 fare is a promotion aimed at getting cross-border traffic back on the rails.
