Tax Relief Query

Hi. I got a crown done last year costing €990. I had to wait until the tax year was over to claim tax relief. I filled in a med 1 form online, but only got €125.87 back from the collector general. I thought I was entitled to 20%, which would mean I'd recieve €198.

This is from the citizens information website..
From January 2009, tax relief on medical and health expenses incurred from 1 January 2009 will be given at the standard rate of 20%...Since 2007, you get tax relief on the total amount spent on qualifying health expenses.

Just wondering am I missing something here, as it states I can claim 20% on the full amount?. It used to be an excess of €125, but this doesn't apply to 2009 afaik..Thanks

its a med 2 form for dental, has to be issued by your dentist as the dentists PPS numbers has to go with it and a signature. Med 1 is for medical (doctors) expenses. Tax relief is at 20 percent.

Cheers for the replies guys. It was actually a med 2 alright I got from the dentist. I claimed it back online through PAYE anytime, and I just clicked on the dental tax relief section. I don't know why I didn't receive back the full 20%. I'll drop them an email. Thanks again..

dont quote me but i think it has something to do with the tax rate you are paying, vaguely recall my dentist telling me something along those lines

It's definitely 20% for everyone now. They changed this a few years ago, as it was whatever the higher rate of tax you paid. I sent them an email now and I'll report back as to why I didn't receive the full 20%. Thanks for the replies.

Is this the same relief rate that is applied to orthodontic work or is it at the higher rate??

I sent them an eamil last Monday but didn't hear anything back. I also rang them but had to wait for someone that could answer my query and just hung up in the end as I was waiting too long..
