Workout when feeling stiff

    Guys & Gals,
Whats your general thoughts on working out when you stiff and sore from a previous workout.
I was playing football on Monday, first time in a while, so was obviously quite stiff on Tues & Wed.
I went to the gym last night for about an hour but didn't really have the same energy for it.

When feeling stiff from sports or a work out should you just push through it and continue your normal routine, day on, day off or wait until your feeling normal again, no aches & pains.

Is there any downside to working out when feeling still - will you get the same benefits or are the muscles in shock therefore not as responsive so not getting the most from your workout?

try some stretches before your routine, loosen up, maybe some cardio, get really warmed up, then your body will tell you once you start your routine ...

I find after a few minutes into cardio exercise I don't feel the stiffness.....until later ;)

If I feel stiff I hop on an exercise bike, followed by a few static and dynamic stretches.

Start off your weights with an unloaded bar and build it up, usually does the trick for me. Also perhaps you're not doing enough of a warm down after the previous nights workout - try more stretching / cool down jog.

Firstly, understand WHY you are feeling stiff...sounds to me like DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). If you are just getting back into exercise, or upping the amount you do this is normal and will subside. Its ok to train through it - but dont push to the point where you feel pain - thats an injury.
To alleviate this stiff/sore feeling there are things you can do. Gallons of water, electrolytes while you work out (Gatorade etc), and if you can take a bath after training it helps. If you are sore the next day, try and ice bath (without screaming:)) or hot/cold shower on the sore parts. Hot one minute, then really cold - keep alternating. This allows expansion and contraction of the muscles.
Pace yourself - give yuor body a chance to adjust. DOMS should be gone in 48 hours....if it lasts longer than this, you're over doing it.;)
