Gym problems

Having joined the gym in good faith a few months ago find myself getting abuse from the other members. A few rough types in there, very aggressive. Today received threats, I'm thinking it's body-building drugs makes them behave this way.

The reception staff seem disinterested and unhappy in their jobs. I know the fees are low for students but the standards of behaviour there and language are hard to bear.

The students in the main college seem made to feel unwelcome there. If students are to be subjected to such abuse from random groups of foul-mouth people from outside the university students should be warned before joining. I was shocked at the way people behave there.
I feel intimidated and unwelcome there and am interested in other people's experiences..

You paid to be a member of the gym. Tell them to FO.

    http://www.dcu.ie/dcusport/contact.shtml

If you want to report it you can use that form.

Can you shed any more light on the event?

There does seem to be really bad atmosphere in the gym.
Had four guys intimidate me today. I was on my own. They seem to be in training for something. The leader of the group was very aggressive and cursed everyone. When I left got spat at from the balcony overlooking reception in full view of receptionist. I didn't complain.

    You're being kind of vague.

What do you mean by intimidated?

    And spitting over the balcony?
I'd be pretty shocked if the staff didn't do anything about that, that's the kind of behaviour you see in a schoolyard.

Thanks guys, just had to vent. I don't want to give details cos it's an ongoing situation there. It's a pity really there must be a vacumn at the management level if people feel it's ok to behave this way.
I will continue to go there. I'll be in real trouble now I've made it public! That's all i have to say, waiting for other experiences there from others cause it might just be me..

Have you ever made a proper complaint to staff or are you just assuming people notice and aren't acting on it?

Here's the thing, I'd feel like a fool standing there describing being bullied by this group. Relive an event that a receptionist can do nothing about?
I suppose I did think it would be noticed I wasn't thinking anything I just wanted out of the place.

Spitting over a balcony, how did some of the Ballymun locals get into the DCU gym? I went to college there and had to suffer the 13a bus most days, went back to DCU after two years on the 13a and a traveller sat beside me, brought back memories of a local trying to sell me runners on the bus etc.....anyway thats my rant.

I know what you mean about Bully Boys in the gym. I do a lot of cardio and light weights as I am not trying to get the big stupid musle look. A lot of the 'muscle' guys stand around the machines looking into the mirrors and being ubnoxious ******s. They have this false perception of fitness, whenever you see them on a treadmill they struggle after half a km.

If I where you I would just ask one of them why they aren't doing leg exercises, as these people generally only do upper body and have twig like legs...believe me its the worst put down you can give these people!!

With all due respect I find this hard to believe, the gym is run in a very professional manner. Unless you have formalised a complaint, I can't see much truth in this. If you have experienced abuse then I'm sorry for you but really this smells like some trolling...

Yeah, posting here isn't going to solve your problems, and tbh, it sounds like you are either making this up or exaggerating

That's ur opinion I got mine. I saw the guards there at gym reception in the afternoon. Looks like they have to sort the place out.

Ive never seen any abuse there and ive been going there on and off for years, usually people seem to keep to themselves.
So you wont tell us exactly what happened and you didnt report it! What are you looking for here then?

This is a forum where I can shed some light and perhaps inform perspective members that the gym area is open to all types of people. Some who are childish and not in full control of themselves. Regular people who might want some exercise will come into contact with these people and perhaps not appreciate their bad manners.

Members complaint = management lip service = identified troublemaker(me) = pissed off gym staff vaporise troublemaker with drip-fed venom

    You're missing that bit

For the record I've never had bother in the gym

iv been a member the last two years and must ssay the only bad behaviour iv ever seen was twice in the last week by one particular guy. This was only mild, mayb classed as "unsportman" like in a gym sense but to hear about spitting and bullying.... im shocked.

    although staff are uninterested...

Tbh the free weights room is mostly silent from anytime iv been in there with everyone listening to their MP3 players, people in there aswell were courteous enough with guys asking around for a spotter and asking politely to use weights if they were near someone.

I'm not suggesting what the OP is making this up..

But did you do anything to provoke them?

Doesn't seem usual for such a beaviour.. did you look at them the wrong way prior to meeting these people?

In all organizations there are networks – they become established in time. People can manoevure themselves and their families into positions of power and that's a human need also. Power.
In the gym at DCU there is also a network let's call it the northside network(nn). In the first instance it is encountered at reception where members are filtered. Quite a simple and enjoyable process for the filtering agent which can pass the hours and enhance the agent's power and reputatation to the nn. Gym members are graded - 'alright' or 'not right' solely at the discretion of the filtering agent.

When an older and well established member of the nn is filtering (as happened in my case) by well established and obvious criteria e.g. : non-drinker, academic, weirdee. The graded member is allowed through to work-out, helplessly try to get through the day, blamelessly exercise while the nn agent at reception can direct things appropriately.
This is where the magic happens..
A 'spotter' (junior nn member) on the gym floor easily locates the offending member and can direct willing 'alright' members into an aggressive stance and hopefully a physical confrontation with the unfortunate member.
The vacumn in management and the enviable power of the nn permits this to happen as it does in many places across this old town..

We have to take down this Northside Network before they take over the college!

It may be too late for that, clearly they've taken control of reception and campus security, we just have to hope that they're happy enough with the sports complex for now.

I have no idea what you just said. Speaking like a 16 year old trying to buy condoms really isn't helping anything. I think it would help us all if you just answered the following in a straightforward manner:

    1. What happened in the Gym?
    2. Did you tell the receptionist or a staff member?

Id say the first time you saw them you looked a little too long (you should only glance in gyms) and they smelled your fear, this is like something off inbetweeners..is this will?

I go to the gym 4 days a week. I've never had a problem nor have I ever witnessed anyone else having problems. In fact when I first went, people saw that I was struggling with some of the equipment (I'd never been to the gym before this year) and were more than happy to help me out. These were members taking time from their own sessions to help me as well, not the staff members.

Blome, you're talking absolute nonsense now. You really are. Stop digging.

This is without a doubt one of the most pathetic attempts at trolling I've ever seen. Throw in a bit of trying to slander the name of a well run gym, evidenced by the recent awards won there. Are you like some local competition trying to stir **** or something?

How did this thread even manage three pages?

Actually, come to think of it, someone brandished an AK47 at me in the gym.... how did they get it in like?
