Can you recommend a receiver and a set of speakers to match an 8404 which is being fed with a PS3 slim & Laptop Hdmi.
The laptop itself has an Nvidia card, which as you probably know, has issues with audio over HDMI with philips tvs.
Putting a receiver in between is supposed to solve this also.

Im interested in something with True HD, DTS etc and possibly ProLogic 2z, if you have any.

Price being kept to a minimum though.

Also a question about the Onkyo receiver power comsumption. Some are rated between 400-500w. Does this mean 400-500 at Full volume or 400-500 once switched on , even at low volume.

    :)

    iKnoor,

Thanks for the post - we have the Onkyo TXSR507 at a sale knock down price of £229.95 / €269.99 which is True HD & DTS (It's for sale at €329 + most places in Dublin!)

Alternatively you could go the Denon route and have a look at the AVR1610 at £279.95 / €329.99 or the classic Denon AVR1910 at just £389.95 / €439.99 which is really a stunning piece of kit (we have it wired up to our 8404 in-store in Belfast!

The power consumption on the Onkyo 507 according to Onkyo's specsis 380Watts however I would have to presume that is a median figure and that the actual consumption will vary with usage.

On the speaker front I would recommend either the Tannoy SFX 5.1 pack at £199.95 / €239.99 or the excellent matching Onkyo SKSHT528 pack at just £169.95 / €199.99 both of which are excellent - alternatively if you want to push the boat out - we FINALLY received a few of the Q Acoustics 2000 5.1 packs and we are releasing a few of these packs including the upgraded QA2020 speakers * 4 instead of the 2010 at just £499.95 / €599.99.

Hope some of that is useful to you and as ever - drop me a line if I can assist in any way.

    Thanks again,

    Hi John,

First off, sorry to hi-jack the thread, but it's time to add to my 8404.

I'm very interested in the denon 1910 and the q-acoustics pack (with the upgraded speakers?) set up that you've listed above.

Can you let me know the price on the above with all the cables needed (I'm guessing 30m of speaker cable and sub cable?). I'd also need a pair of speaker stands and I'm also looking at the Philips BDP7500, all delivered to Dublin.

It's my first receiver/speaker set up so if there's anything obvious I've missed/need can you let me know.

    Ta.

    Hi Vestan.

The speaker pack is on offer to Boardies at £499 and the receiver is £389.95 in our sale at the minute.

The speaker cable that I would recommend for this pack is the Audio Innovations Ultra Micro cable which is £2.99 a metre and a 1.5m Philips sub cable (actually a digital coax cable but makes an excellent sub cable) will set you back £9.99. We also do a 7.5m Cambridge sub cable at £19.95 if you need a bit of length

Do you need a specific height on the stands ? The most popular stands that we do are the Soundstyle Z2 stands which are £59.95 and they are 57cm high.

If you take a look at those stands and the cables and let me know, we will work your out a price including all of it delivered to Dublin.

Cheers and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

    Dave

iv been looking at the amps and speakers you suggested. i still cant decide which though.

I have another few questions. (sorry for being such a noob)

Video-How does these receivers handle video. e.g. PS3 1080p to receiver. Does it do anything to the video signal at all or is it physically allowed to passthrough.

Is it possible to set the receivers so that it does not upscale or do anything else to the video signal?

Its physically impossible to make the video signal better than the original signal except for upscaling the picture. So im at a loss as to why receivers do anything with the video instead of leaving the TV do the work.

Im sightly worried as i have heard some receivers including a certain pioneer model that distorts the video signal. This has been officially confirmed by Pioneer.

Warranty- if something goes wrong with either of the receivers how long would it normally take for a repair ? ) (a guesstimate will do as i know you can quote individual cases)

    thanks in advance :)

    iKnoor,

thanks a million for the post.

The Denon AVR1910 is a super unit and one of the most flexible in terms of upscaling options - as you will see from looking around at the reviews and Manufacturers specs - the various different Receivers differ in their abilities to upscale / pass through depending on the individual model - you can either have a look at the respective manuals on the manufacturers sites or take the easy option :p and tell us what kit you have, what you want to do with it and we will work out the best options for you!

On the warranty front - the Denon specifically has a 2 year warranty ( and don't forget that we do offer a 5 year warranty for just 10% of the purchase price) it's virtually impossible to give a fixed turnaround for service as it depends on how busy the manufacturers are and if the unit needs parts - however what I would have to say at the moment is that I am astounded at the moment how relaible as a category AV receivers have become over the last 2 years given the huge complexity of these units now - in short - it probably won't go wrong () and if it does () we will do our best to get it back to you asap - in that regard we are currently overhauling our own service procedures to speed up service and hopefully reduce admin.

Sorry for being so long winded and as ever drop us a line if we can assist,

    ATB,

    John Mc
