Minimum Wage

I'm a producer for RTE's Prime Time and I'm looking to get in contact with people who are currently on the minimum wage who might be interested in contributing to a programme on the subject.

I'm looking for people who have perhaps lost a job in another industry and who are now having to work for minimum wage and couples where one of whom is on minimum wage.

However I'm interested to hear from anyone who is on minimum wage and feels they have a story to tell.

    David

I'm not working for a minimum wage but I think you should raise the point about these new 'working for free' initiatives that have been cropping up lately.

FAS have recently launched a WWP scheme that enables graduates/unemployed people to work in companies for free to gain experience. That might sound fine from the outset but this is obviously going to be exploited by employers and there are a number of roles on the FAS site already looking for experienced people who are willing to work for nothing. There is a thread on boards about it here

Another scheme that cropped up was the possibility of paying employers (via a company) to showcase your talents. Thousands of people are unemployed in this country yet there are companies like this that expect people to pay for work! (Okay it is free now but soon there will a subscription charge).

I think these issues should be raised as a sub topic in your debate about minimum wage to truly highlight the economic state that this once prosperous country has now found itself in.

i have personally sent an e-mail to FAS regarding the wpp schemes and they where taking down within days, i have also brought it to the attention of the local FAS officer(while i was enquiring about certain courses)they said that it has been mentioned to the mgmt of FAS.
also there are companies&recruitment agencies taking an advantage people with skills trying to pay them the min wage.

David i still have the original e-mails with the attachments that i sent to FAS if you want them just pm.

What about the legions of highly skilled graduates in Ireland who are working in menial jobs because of the zero opportunities presented to them?

    I fit into said catagory

Judas, are you currently on minimum wage? If so I would like to talk to you.

RTE will pay a small stipend to contributors to recompense them for their time.

Please let me know if you are interested.

David, there aren't so many minimum wage jobs out there anymore as the FAS Work Placement Programme gives employers the opportunity to convert these into zero wage jobs. Please, as someone in the media look into this anti-job creation programme. You could start by checking FAS website jobs numbers prior to and after creation of the programme.

Jesus christ that just takes the biscuit, no offense to people working as waiting staff, but i thought the WPP was ment to give people experience so it may be easier to get a job in their chosen field later on. I don't understand why FAS are allowing jobs like this appear on their program, clearly its just employers taking advantage and getting people to work for free

Minimum wage is now €0.00 an hour

40% of the full time jobs advertised on Fas.ie are now unpaid. Here are great examples of how this system is abused:

    Hi David,

I am delighted your considering a program on this issue. I am an experienced hospitality professional made redundant a year ago, oddly enough from one of these now infamous developer owned hotels.

I have very strong opinions on this entire minimum wage debate and in particular certain lobby groups in the hospitality sector seeking a reduction in wages. We often hear this on going debate about Sunday premium and to my mind and experience, very few establishments comply

I just landed a job and whilst not on minimum wage, it pays exactly half what i was previously on. I have held very senior positions in the industry but like many others have to take the pain. Sadly a very unsavory situation is developing across the board with below minimum rates being offered to candidates desperate for work, i know of many examples and one in particular comes to mind just this week, a restaurant in a large midlands town paying €6, yes €6 to an experienced chefs assistant and a kitchen porter earning €320 for 50 hours work.

I will send you my details if you want to PM me, good luck with the program.
