Triathlon breathing exercises to improve performance

Tunney posted up a link to the BrianMac website yesterday, so I had a nose around and found
this article talking about the cycle to run transition and how some breathing exercises that basically train your lungs could improve your performance in the race. These exercises are called "inspiratory muscle training (IMT)".
A few googles later I came across this article here that both explained what was involved and also provided further back up to show a significant improvement in performance.

I am most definitely not an elite athlete, and this year would be looking to improve upon my mid-pack status for tri's and duathlons.

Have any of ye come across this before? or do/have any of ye used these techniques?
    Any opinions?

I am no expert, and am strictly a runner so I can't talk about cycling, swimming. I bought buy something along the lines described last year. Called a "powerlung". For me it seems to have worked. Prior to using it respiration was the first thing to go - now the legs usually go first. 7-8 minutes twice a day does it for me. Pacebo effect ? Don't know ... but I am convinced enough to kee[ using it.

I will say that a) a friend who coaches at at the equivalent of secondary school was politely sceptical and b) explaining what is to security at airports on US bound flights is more exciting that I cared for (next time I will bring the packaging).
