Those brand new runners purchased in the sales have since deterioated to that unattractive off-grey brown colour. Is it harmful to put them in the washing machine, if so how do I get them reasonably respectable again ?

no wash higher than 20degrees and put them in a pillow case,

    that should do the trick:)

The typical guidance is that you shouldn't wash them in the washing machine at all, until you're quite ready to relegate them to high fashion(?) / gardening wear. It's bandied about that the washing machine will take approximately 100 miles off of the running life of your shoes.

What's wrong with off-grey/brown? It shows that they've been getting good use! I really don't like that bright white, brand-new look - I almost start looking for puddles to run through...

Off grey/brown is probably what passes for 'respectable' around here :D !

I go for the 'au natural' look and never clean them.

What I do with mine when they're particularly filthy is use a shower hose. If they're mank after a run I'll hose them off in the bath with a shower hose before the dirt sets in which usually does a good job. If it's old dirt I do the same except softly use a nail brush. Doesn't get them looking brand new again but makes them look decent.

I had a particularly bad experience when I was much younger when washing runners in a machine, they came out feeling about a size and a half too small.

I now have the opposite problem, I have a particularly bright pair of Asics I got in the sales I use purely for road sufaces so they're not going to get too dirty at this rate, I feel as if other runners are looking at me saying "Ha, another newbie out as his new years resolution, I wonder how long he'll last."
