Sky+ box with no hard drive

I have a couple of old sky plus boxes and the hard drives are faulty, I took the hard drives out and powered the boxes up, just to use for the fta channels and they're working away fine but when I put the boxes into standby the power light stays green. The boxes go into standby no problem and work fine otherwise but the light stays green no matter what. Only time it will go red is when they're plugged out from the socket and plugged back in, but once you power them up it stays green again, its a bit puzzling, it would be nice to have the green/red light working just to know if the box is definitely on standby.
Can anyone enlighten me? Any replies are appreciated.

I'm surprised they work at all without the hard drive in them, any time I've tried it they never boot.

yeah, they work fine, no problem at all, i still have them on, I checked them there now again, they're still powering on and off no problem but that green light is solid and it refuses to turn red!!

At a wild guess, I would say the light change is dependent on checking that the mains power is off/low/down/whatever and also that the power to the drive is off/low/down/whatever.

Remove the drive and the check fails as the box can't be sure the drive is powered down. Or more likely it can't determine a state change since the state hasn't changed.

    That's my guess.

Try sticking in a good drive and see what happens.

You are using a Sky+ against the way it was designed it's hardly surprising that it doesn't function 100% correctly.

Yes, thats true, its hardly surprising and zagmund probably hit the nail on the head in saying with there being no drive in the box, the system cannot recognise its shut down fully as the non existant drive has'nt shut down naturally enough!!

    Thanks for the replies guys.
