    Hi i am just wondering does anyone here do the course? If so are you enjoying it?

    I can't decide between business and spanish in TCD or Commerce International with Spanish. I want to keep my options open. The door is kinda shut for accounting i believe with this degree?

    Any opinions?

    Hey! I do TSM Spanish so I share nearly all my classes with business and Spanish. In short I really like Spanish in Trinity. The staff are mostly Spanish and are lovely. The department is also very small which means your teachers/assistants will get to know you in class. Your 1st year timetable for Spanish will be:
    2 small grammar classes a week (1 hr each)
    1 oral tutorial (same, 1 hr)
    1 listening comprehension class ('')
    1 text analysis class ('')- basically reading articles from Spanish newspapers.
    Intro to Spain/Spanish American literature lecture once a week
    Intro to Modern Spain (Culture and brief history)- 1 lecture after christmas

    Also I think Business students do a class in Business Spanish, along with the business subjects. I really couldn't recommend Spanish anymore to do in Trinity.

    feel free to pm for details :)

    It's fine, I'm in first year. As regards the literature it's pretty interesting. So far we've done poetry, (16th century which hasn't been great, but we get notes from each lecture). But that was only at the start. For your christmas assessment you'll have to write an essay due for january on poetry only. As long as you do some work it shouldn't be a problem. Also you'll be given a list of books by the lecturer on the different poets, so it helps to look at ideas that others have come up with, in relation to what you are studying (as long as you reference it in the essay when you mention them in your essay- you'll learn all this :))

    Apart from poetry we've done a play called 'la casa de Bernarda Alba' and now we're looking at a book of short stories which has one page in Spanish and the other in English. So far it's going well, (and literature wasn't really something I liked in secondary school). If you enjoy Spanish, I'd seriously recommend Spanish in Trinity. Although I might be biased in saying that, it is definitely the highlight of my studies.

    Not to dissuade you from the Spanish course but you should know that it is really literature based. I'm in third year now and we've done two literature modules per term per year (with the exception of this term where one has been replaced with Spanish Linguistics) so an interest in reading/literature really is almost necessary. There isn't an awful lot of focus on the language especially since most classes are taught through English but it is a great course. As djcervi said the staff are lovely and very helpful and if you do love Spanish, you will love this course.

    @DJ
    Thanks for your post. sounds really interesting. defo putting it down!

    @Tom
    Hi Tom, are u studying business and spanish or spanish through arts because i was told there isnt alot of literature at all. I wouldnt mind it because unfortunately in the business and spanish course there isnt enough literature to be recognised to teach spanish by the teaching council :(

    I do Spanish through arts. I checked the TCD website there and the Business and Spanish course doesn't seem to touch on literature at all which is pretty crappy because it is a really great way to improve vocab and your understanding of the language. If you're hoping to teach Spanish why not do the arts course and combine it with something like Economics so you still have the Business aspect as well?

    yeah thats a reason why i am considering UCD as it is through arts. I wouldnt consider doing Economics alone you see. Although i think i would be happy to settle with not much literature for what seems a great university. On the other hand the Instituto Cerventes is right at the door for additional resources :)

    Actually the 1st year's Business and Spanish attended our literature module and had to do our end of term essay. So there is literature definitely for 1st year, dunno about the upcoming years. I'm sure there must be, if they study some of it in 1st year.

    There are a few people doing Economics and Spanish in my class anyway. They seem to be happy with it.

    Maybe the website isn't very up to date so! You could email the department to ask: spanish@tcd.ie

    Yeah there's a good few in my class with that combo as well but the only problem is that the Economics department don't let students go on erasmus.

    1). Is there really any difference between Business and spanish in TCD and business and economics in arts? , if so could you explain them, thanks.
    2). Also, can you not become a spanish and business teacher if you do business and spanish in TCD?
