    Hi,

I'm new to the boards scene. Am here to talk to people about weight loss etc.

I don't have the money to splash on a gym membership, thankfully, because I never went when I did have a membership :)

What are the best ways for everyday fitness? Have started the whole up and down the stairs instead of the lift, walking to the bigger shop (further away) every day for an apple and have a pedometer so trying to hit 10,000 steps a day.

Are sit-ups good? Sorry for my n00b questions but I admit, I am a complete newbie to all this...

Thanks in advance to all the good replies

Cycle to work, and everywhere you can. Situps are not much use, time is far better spent doing other exercises, read the sticky links. A chinup bar and your own bodyweight can go a long way, check out www.simplefit.org

I was i the same sort of position as yourself, joined an gym, never went and wound up losing a few bob in the process.

As far as keeping fit everyday I would suggest walking everywhere, within reason, and if possible go for a jog in the evening. As mentioned in a previous post cycling is also great.

I started jogging myself several months ago and I can confidently say its alot nicer to jog in the park than being stuck on a treadmill.
    It's free too

    Cheers.

The Chin up bar is my downfall, so instead there is one in my gym with a lift on it so you can increase the weight everytime but you're not using your own bodyweight.
I swim once a week a week as well as gonig to the gym and walk too.

    howdy,

If it is weight loss you are mainly interested in then i would suggest monitoring your food firstly then fitness. but you have the right idea by what you are already doing, fair play.
Myself, i find jogging the best, of course also doing what you have mentioned, going to the shop further away and all, and what i tend to do is find a route three or four miles and time my first lap and each week try to improve my time. for a 3 mile lap my first attempt was a miserable 40+ mins but after a few months of twice weekly runs i got it down to "quickest one" 20.4mins. and what i found benefitted me most was my slight change in diet. i just cut out all the junk and added more veg and the likes.
after my run i would spend 15-20 mins doing basic streches and including sit ups press ups. I could never do chin ups i think i only ever managed ten and that was probably when i was in my prime :) so i dont bother with them.
cycling is also great although personally i dont find it as challenging as running maybe because i am only new to cycling.
Anyway hope i was of some help. best of luck in your efforts.

There's so many body weight exercises that you can do and their effectiveness should never be underestimated. Many are hard to describe but I'd say a quick google would help you out. Seriously, workouts in front of the TV can work and I'm not talking about the latest celeb "fitness" dvd.

    Hi folks,

Thanks for the messages on this. It's nice to have the different opinions on the matter.

Think I will take up davey101's idea. Have picked out a route that I know and will start from tomorrow giving that a go...should be fun :)

Here's one question though, where do ye carry your water?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 290 ✭✭davey101

    Ha good question!
I would either fill a small bottle and just hold it in my hand which eventually became a nusance especially with mp3 in the other hand its a pain in the arse having things hop about in your pocket. messes with the dynamics of running :p
so i stopped bringing one. you can get these little belts that hold small bottles, but unless nessecary i wouldnt bother after a couple of goes at it you will know yourself. Just drink plenty over a period of time before you go out, and drink some when you get back again slowly and over time.
if you find yourself becoming dehydrated do bring some and a tip i came across which i found brilliant was to take a mouthfull of water hold it in your mouth for around eight seconds or untill saliva starts to form in your mouth then swallow followed by a large mouthfull and small sips over time. i swear it works. the theory is that as you hold it in your mouth you brain realizes your getting water releases saliva and the body is ready to absorb the water rather than it going to the stomach and then having to be processed, next time you have a headache try it with a large glass of water works for that too.
Anyway best of luck with your efforts
