Just signed up for this the other day. Am a strongish runner, did my first marathon in 3.35, and run a 1.32 PB half marathon. Am grand on the bike, and will put in a lot of brick training the next 6/7 months before; but am terrified about the swim.

Plan on doing some shorter tri's first in the summer of course, but was just wondering if anyone else was/or has been in a similar position? It's not until mid-Aug

    Thanks guys

I am in a similar position although not going for an IM event. My goal is Camlough Tri and various spint tri's over the summer. I couldn't swim 2 years ago but have dragged myself up to swimming bit by bit. I have enlisted some private swim classes with tri's in mind mainly on advice on here. I'm sticking to the 'if you dont go then you'll never know' motto and if i come out of the water last i'll not mind one bit.

    Good luck anyway

I was in the same boat (;)) as you but managed to get through an Oly and HIM swim last year pretty much from scratch. The wetsuit makes an amazing difference and if you keep with the swim training then it''d be no bother to you if you're not interested in being in the first group out of the water.

Using the pool in One Escape in Smithfield. They've been very helpful, so hoping to get some one-on-one lessons now as well, then just plough away a few times a week in the pool. Live in Kinsealy, so most of my road runs are out that end/towards town.

Thanks guys, feel a bit better knowing someone is starting, or has started in a similar position and done it. I'm 27 now, so hopefully a full Iron Man before I'm 30.... If i live through this one :D

was also intrigued, just looked at mapmyrun (swim) and from the pier to the island it is 1.04km. Nice distance, not too sure how busy the waters would be but I presume it is not something that should be done unsupported.

Its a mile as you need to swim from balscadden because of currents/tides which is to the right of the harbour as ya face it , I know a few lads who have done it before said its decent enough swim

You would deffo need support - and to pick your time right , last thing ya need is a trawler bearing down on ya or 150 yachts deciding to have a race around ya !

Cheers, Dario - Sounds like a plan. Gonna keep heavy bike sessions to Sunday. I'm starting one-on-one swim lessons next week, so hopefully will be ready for that swim in a few months.
