Hand and wrist numbness

    Hi Folks

I am an over weight mid forties chap who has started this January to cycle again. My aim is to cycle the 10 miles to work 3 times a week from March onwards.
I am delighted with my progress and I am cycling 45-60 minutes 4 times a week. I am stretching a lot and my legs are fine. However I am finding my hands and wrists are getting sort of numb though not fully numb, it is a sort of ache type pain. I have been at this 3 weeks and the problem has not improved which I thought it would.

Is there a proper exercise I can do with my hands, is there a grip with my hands on the bike I should try or is there anything I can do to stop this?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

If you are using straight handlebars, get some Ergo bar ends, or cheaper equivalents.

I read that a lot of new cyclists tend to grip their bars too tight and that can cause pain. Just take it easy on the bars.

I have carpal trouble but I manage it very well on the bike ( not as well off the bike ). I have drops and I move my hands around often to avoid numbness. Get gel handlebar tape, or gel padding for under the tape if you have drops, and a good pair of gloves would make a diference if you haven got that already.

Anothet good thing ... learn how to cycle with no hands :)
