A low-carbohydrate diet like Atkins is better at cutting blood pressure than weight-loss pills, say US doctors

While I'm usually not one to get too excited about media reporting on science stories (this kinda explains my view quite well), I think it's interesting that larger public health information bodies are starting to show signs of coming around to a low-carb is good few mentality, particularly in a fat loss situation.

    The paper itself is here.

that should probably be over on the nutrition forum! I didnt read the linky but personally I dont believe in low anything aside from low processed / junk foods. I just cant lift properly on low carb so I wont even be trying it again

edit: just had a look there, it appears it is comparing a low carb diet with a diet of ali / orlistat which is probably a bit different to comparing with a diet of fruit, veg, fish and whole grains?

there is bucket loads of research on the benefits and its quite concrete to say that save your time and money and adopt a lower carb (and low Gi) intake today with adequate protein

In June 2006 the American Family Physician did an overview of Low Carbohydrate diets and stated that :-
“Low-carbohydrate diets had lower dropout rates than low-fat diets in several studies, possibly because of the high protein content and low Glycemic index, which can be appetite suppressing. Data indicate that low-carbohydrate diets are a safe, reasonable alternative to low-fat diets for weight loss.”

An Italian study in October 2007 with almost 9,000 women (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) showed that: -
“A high-GL diet may increase the risk of breast cancer in Italian women. The effect is particularly evident in premenopausal women and those with BMI < 25”.

    Curr Opin Gastroenterol. 2008 Mar;24(2):198-203

Low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets may be an effective choice for weight loss, enhanced satiety and improved metabolic parameters.

I could pick out 10 more showing the same results for different medical conditions, goals etc
