My laptop crashed a burned a couple of days ago. Blue screen of death and all that... anyway I was wondering if there is any way at all possible to retrieve my favorites from it? There is one item I need in there with contact details for someone and I can't believe I hadn't written them down before it crashed.

    Anyway, hoping someone can help

Everything is on the HDD, and assuming that wasnt the cause of the problems then for sure your data should be retrievable. It might be hard to find/decipher, but its all there in some form or another.

If the laptop is still functional, you could use a Linux LiveCD (or LiveUSB) to boot into a basic OS, and from there you can navigate through your HDD and look for the info you want.

If the laptop is physically knackered, you can just remove the HDD and use another computer to access it. You put the HDD into a caddy or USB enclosure (making sure to get the right one for your type of drive) and then just connect it up to another computer. Again, browse through the HDD and try to find the data you need.

First things first though - what is wrong with your laptop? It could be something simple and fixable.

No idea what's wrong with it. Managed to get it started again this evening with no bother?? Nightmare.. Anyway learned my lesson and have everything back up now. We brought it to pc world at the weekend but they said it will need to be wiped and cleaned to get it going again. Unfortunately my expertise only lends itself to turning it off and on again to see if that fixes the problem

Get yourself an external hard drive and make regular backups because you can be sure this problem will arise again and you may not be able to recover your data. Did you drop it or anything?
