I've trawled through the FAQ's and links and can't seem to find an answer to this question that's probably been asked a million times

Why isn't UTV/ITV available on the main EPG and how come it isn't recordable?

    Cheer!

I think it's not on the EPG because it's not a channel officially carried by Sky and in essence the ITV/UTV we pick up is just a frequency that we almost "hacked" into our Sky. If it was on the EPG, I imagine Sky would have to pay ITV for the rights to carry it, whereas this is more of a "Oh, our customers were able to hack the frequency? That's nothing to do with us" In other words, Sky haven't paid to carry it.

ITV is on Freesat which is a competing platform to sky.

ITV is on Sky UK EPGs. UTV is on the NI Sky EPG. UTV is not on the EPG in ROI because UTV wont pay for ROI EPG carriage (may be more complicated than this with TV3 and program rights issues also).

In the medium term if Freesat could get a big enough audience the situation may flip where UTV could withdraw from Sky UK and Sky could end up paying UTV to be on the UK and Irish EPG's.

I believe the main reason is due to advertising revenue. TV3 shares a lot of its program content with ITV/UTV but obviously they would prefer that folk watch the TV3 broadcast rather than the ITV/UTV one for obvious advertising reasons.

Incidentally, don't ITV own a major share in TV3?

They did, they were bought out and TV 3 is now 100% ITV free but they still have deals in place for ITV programming like the soaps, reality shows, game shows etc.

Will this work if you want to record an FTA programme that won't start for a few hours yet?

I don't think it's TV3 stopping UTV on the SKY EPG, because if it were true then why don't they don't stop UPC having ITV1,2,3,4 on their EPG.

UTV has been on UPC\NTL\Cablelink since year dot.

Also - TV3 presumably pay to be carried by Sky and have some say in the matter, I suspect they don't pay anything to be on UPC (probably the opposite- UPC pay to carry them).
