Scenario is: Person A leaves his/her job Person B starts in vacated job.

Person B starts to receive email addressed to Person A.

It would seem that it is common practice for business to automatically forward Person A's email to Person B without the permission of Person A.

This has happened to me where I am receiving private email belonging to the person I have replaced.

So is there an issue with a company forwarding email without an employee's/ex-employees permission or, is the responsibility of the employee to make sure they do not use their company email for personal email services.

In general, emails sent to the company would belong to the company. Most companies would have a data usage policy/IT policy which gives the terms of usage for the IT systems, which normally would state that emails shouldn't be used for personal stuff.

Basically, anyone leaving should let their contacts know that they are no longer available or give an alternate email address.

That's my understanding of the situation. Check with your company's policy and the Data Protection Act.

Thank you Paulw, I agree with your points, however the company I work with do not have any such policies and are purposely ignorant of the Data Protection Act.

I guess that it is something that people need to be aware of and make sure they have a personal email address for their own use.
