I am afraid it gonna cost you around 800-900 euro.Friend of mine just spent 900 for his passat 1.9 tdi .They have the same engine. But there is always other option-I know a good polsh garage where they can do that for about half price as they get parts from Poland and do not charge 50 euro for working-hour.

Do not pay 900 for a timing belt.
I had a 00 Passat last year and it cost 400 to replace the timing belt and that was at a VW dealer. Either go to a Skoda dealer and get a quote - ring around a few - or else find a good local mechanic - ask around somebody always knows one - who is not going to rip them off. 900 is way over the top.

Not a hope 900 anyway. AFAIK it involves a lot more work on a Passat. I'd budget €4-500. Skoda dealer prices aren't bad either. I had my last service done there and some work for NCT and they were cheaper than Seat by a mile and an independent garage I got a quote from. No BS dealing with them either

The engine is mounted back to front in those cars isn't it? So the whole front of the car has to come off.

Pay no more than 500 quid as others have said. It's a labour intensive job so just be aware of that. The actual belt isn't expensive. As others have asked, where are you?

I know of 2 private garages that will do it for under 500. One is in Portarlington and the other is in Graiguenamanagh, Co. Kilkenny. You might be waiting a wee while though as both are flat out (You can't say that about many garages now can you?!).

I think most garages that fix/service and prepare cars for the NCT are flat out. People are keeping cars longer meaning more issues, more services etc.
Its the "garages" that turned to sales as their main form of income that are struggling I believe.

Being a mechanic is still a relatively sought after profession and one which there will always be some level of work. A car salesman on the other hand is a different kettle of fish.

If a timing belt change cost me anything over 400-500 euro I wouldn't have gotten the car in the first place.

The Octavia's engine is mounted transversely as opposed to the old Passat which had it mounted lengthways. Changing the timing belt in the Octavia should be alot less labour intensive compared to the old Passat, hence should be cheaper.

Shop around OP, you will find prices can vary alot as garages charge different labour rates.

you are probably talking about the cost of an engine or something? 900 euro for a timing belt change is crazy.

I had a timing belt changed on my 96' lancer mx saloon and it cost me 185..Cheap enough and I was happy with it.

My Volvo S80 will be getting the timing belt done now soon, I'm expecting to pay 350 - 400 for that one. Timing belts are not that hard to change, I changed a few in my time with cheap runabouts but I don't fancy doing the Volvo incase I make a balls of it.

900 euro for a belt change on any car is too much..
