Google sync...sucks?

    Trying out Google sync to keep my contacts on the iphone constantly updated. From what I can see, Google sync will send anyone who I've ever emailed to my iphone as a contact. So I have a massive Contact list now most of which are listed simply as email addresses and most of which I have no idea who they are and will probably never contact again.

    This is completely pointless...surely there's a way to choose which contacts should be added? I don't want a list of 1000+ contacts on my phone.

    Gmail does that, whether you Sync or not. You can just to Gmail, select Contacts, and delete the extras.

    Yeah but there's hundreds of them, and then I'll have to keep on deleting the extras as more email addresses are added from me emailing random people in the future, which I'll also have to constantly delete.

    My phone only syncs with those listed under 'my contacts', to which I have to manually add every contact. Every other correspondent gets listed under 'all contacts' and these are not synced with my phone. I have 147 in 'my contacts' and 600+ in 'all contacts'. Either you've added every contact into 'my contacts' or some other setting is wrong.

    For some reason I can't choose "selected groups" in itunes...the option is greyed out and there are no groups listed. The phone syncs with "all contacts" automatically.

    When using google sync you should turn off contacts sync in itunes. Google sync uses microsoft exchange to sync your contacts over the internet and so there is no need to plug your phone into your pc and sync via itunes.

    Ah, I get it now. Re-read the setup instructions and I missed out on this bit;
    13. Unless you want to delete all the existing Contacts and Calendars on your phone, select the Keep on my iPhone option when prompted. This will also allow you to keep syncing with your computer via iTunes.

    If you want to sync only the My Contacts group, you must choose to Delete Existing Contacts during the Google Sync install when prompted. If you choose to keep existing contacts, it will sync the contents of the "All Contacts" group instead.

    edit: Synchronisation from PC to iphone seems to work, but not from iphone to PC (Tested by deleting a contact on the iphone, and it not being deleted in google contacts, and then creating a new contact on iphone and it not appearing in google contacts)...maybe it takes a while to sync?

    edit 2: Seemed to refresh to reflect changes after I clicked "All contacts" then went back in to "My contacts"

    i seem to have a somewhat similar problem, in that the only contacts that google contacts are interested in are email ones - no numbers appear to get synced onto google (using exchange) unless they're associated with an email, no numbers get saved otherwise?

    You can set up groups in Address Book on the Mac, and they transfer over to the iPhone, and show up in Contacts. I'm not sure if it can be done if you don't use Address Book. You can't set up groups on the iPhone itself, which is a bit silly.
