    Well Lads,

Am looking into a week in Lanzorote in March just before racing starts to get some nice sunny training in and rang a Travel Agent today to enquire about the price of bringing mine over. I was told €30 each way which is what I expected really but then came the weird part..... 'You will only be able to bring it if there is room'.....excuse me?? 'You will find out on the day if you can bring it or not, it depends on if there is space on the plane'.....WTF??? Any of you guys come across this before? I swear thats what she said to me!! What if I can get it over and then I'm told there is no space to bring it back......

    Any advice lads???

    Dave

you will hire a full carbon for about €20 a day ,less hassle .just bring your peddles and shoes.

like everything its a risk, thats what they (the airlines) say to cover themselves, but in reality you would have to be seriously seriously unlucky for this to happen, and if so it will arrive the next day, whats trhe big deal.

theres no guarantee you'll make it to your destination either btw

basically its normal standard arse covering procedure.

RE where to stay in Lanzarote. I have been to Matagorda area, 5 mins by taxi from airport and on coastal strip with 10 plus miles of a separate cycle/pedestrian route reaching from Puerto del la Cruz (or PDC) to main town of Arrecife and beyond. All on the level and away from car traffic. Heat and sunburn to be mindful of! wear gloves and suncream on ears and nose! Several bike hire places with all sorts from regular bikes to fancy four wheel/two person affairs and also Segway machines. There is Q and A forum for Lanzarote in 'tripadvisor' site that you might browse or inquire further.

I brought a bike on a package to turkey, on the way out it was 30 euro. On the way bike they knew nothing about bikes and it was 200 euro.

If you are bringing a bike get it in writing that it is 30 euro and if they do fleece you, as they are fond of in tourist spots, keep the receipts and get your money back from the agent.

    €200

Thanks for all the replies lads! I suppose it is just a standard practice just I have travelled with golf clubs on numerous occasions and never had that said to me!!

Sure I'll book it and see what happens. Picking up new bike in first week of March so wanna bring that and get used to it rather then renting one!

That happened to me in Madrid 10 years ago, flying back with Aer Lingus on a normal scheduled flight. Iberia were the handling agents and they wanted to charge the bikes as excess baggage and it was around £250. Took some firm insistence but they were dissuaded in the end. It was lucky we turned up to the airport early though. No harm to have something printed out that shows you paid for the bikes.

You may have to convince the bus driver at the airport that you've booked the bike on as well.

I got lucky on my trip to Mallorca last year - there were no questions asked on the return flight, so it ended up being much cheaper to bring my own rather than renting.

Overall, it shouldn't be any more hassle than a scheduled flight, but as the lads (afaik) above have said, things will go wrong every once in a while.

I would take jwshooter's advice and hire a bike out there. It takes away a shed load of hassle and uncertainty and is potentially as economical.

    See here for example:

Or else hire a pedalo :P

Probably not relevant to the OP but one for everybody else to keep in mind, Ryanair have a 20kg limit on sports equipment and they'll royally fleece you if you go over. It seems to be a new rule as I didn't have any issue bringing a bike with them during the summer but a friend just came back from France and has some serious issues trying to get bike+box under the weight limit.

It is a new rule. With Aer Lingus it is 15kg. So far enforcement is spotty.

thats why you (all) are supposed to pay for it there and back before you go.
most of the low budget flights Ive been on have agents and also dont speak the language (obviously) in the destination so paying before you go theres no arguing with reciept ;)

Yes, certainly makes sense but we had paid already in the Aer Lingus from Madrid case... not sure that it said anything on our tickets though. So having it in writing one way or the other makes sense. Any recent flight with Ryanair it says it on your printout, not 100% sure if the same is true of Aer Lingus though.

Just back and I hired a bike from Renner bikes, Trek with full ultegra €110 for 8 days full carbon €20 per day he supplies pedals, bottles, shoes, helmets, spare tubes, I brought my own pedals, bottles helmet and tools.
I had one small problem , I got a puncture on the 3rd day about 40k from PDC and I could not pump the tyre, due to a small bit of a valve jammed solid in the pump from the last hirer, but thanks to a guy named Peter from Sweden cycling in the opposite direction who stopped and let me use his pump to get me home.
