    Hi,

Im just wondering what people thought of these cars in general. Anything i should know before i view one?

The model Im going to see is a 2005 2.5ltr Diesel with 75K miles, with a load of extras.

Its not online so i cant give you guys a link. Any idea what a decent price on it should be?

    Copypasta from honestjohn:

Good: Impressively solid, smart-looking saloon with decent handling and plenty of equipment. Keen second-hand prices. Decent reliability.
Bad: Depreciation suffered by first owners. Very limited leg and headroom in the rear.

    What to Watch Out For
D5 timing belts, tensioners, pulleys and waterpumps all best changed at 60,000 miles or 4 years whichever comes first. Tensioners prone to failure and may not last the scheduled 96,000 miles or 8 years. D5 Inlet manifold swirl flaps prone to breaking off at any time from 3 years old.

Check the state of air cleaner box. Open bonnet, look down the back of the air cleaner box and it may be bent out of shape. Volvo won't sell a lid only (which was the broken part) and the complete box is £139. When the lid is put on it exerts an unfair strain on the box and bends it leaving the lid only partially engaged which can lead to a broken lid then onto a damaged air mass sensor and on to dangerous surges when the car idles.

On D5s poor starting can signify injector problem. Bosch EDC15 and EDC16 injector failure on pre-2003 D5s is becoming quite common. Cost £1,200 - £1,500 to replace. Othterwise often need new fuel injectors when they reached mileage of around 100,000.

Sudden cutting out/total lack of response on 1995 build cars seems to be the result of a wiring fault. Electronic Throttle Module on early petrol models can pack up leaving the engine in limp home mode. ECU upgrade available that may cure it. If not, car needs a new £650 ETM.

On early D5s (up to 2004) a rubber core plug can pop out into the bellhousing, depositing the engine oil on the clutch of manuals (a £750 repair job). Obviously thousands more if the engine seizes as a result.

Geartronic autobox failures increasingly common, particularly on cars that have been towing. The transmission oil cooler on these cars is modular and can be increased in capacity by adding modules. This is ESSENTIAL for towing (though often overlooked) and may also be necessary for other types of use.

Anyone have an idea of the average mpg, im told he is getting 45 but it seems a bit optimistic reading the reviews on car sites.

Petrol engines are quite thirsty from what I hear, particularly if you go for an auto. If you're looking for fuel economy, the D5 (available in 163 and 185bhp) is the one to go for.

Overall a great car though and I would strongly recommend it.

Have an '03 one, highly impressive car. Its the D5 SE, 2.4l version. If you read my latest post in the Belfast to porto thread you will see why. MPG is quite good, the on board computer (probably +/- 5-10%) is currently reading 49mpg. Thats over about 1500 miles, 30% of them city driving. You would probably expect further improvement in a manual. 45 - 50mpg is definately achievable if you drive anyway sensibly. Loads of power too if necessary. The SE version in particular is very well kitted out, full, leather, heated seats etc.. From 0-60 its not the quickest, but it excels at mid range. My version has 340Nm torque, resulting in great acceleration when overtaking. Nice car to cruise along in at 80+.

It seems to be a cracking car alright, not so sure about the 900 odd euro tax each year though.

Get a 2.0T and it will only be 600.
