Here are the METARs for the last 18hrs at OLBA. Around the time of the crash (0030Z) there was a thunderstorm in the vicinity, though the actual conditions on the ground were fairly benign. Still, if they flew into that TS then it was asking for trouble.

The Ethiopian B737 that crashed yesterday was originally EI-CSW of Ryanair. It was delivered in 2002 and only moved to Ethiopian last summer.

This is all greek to me, could someone please explain it in laymans terms. Would this ex-Ryanair not be designed to take lightening hits? Or is it too early to assume that this is what took it out of the sky?

    Apparently it was pilot error.

The problem with flying into thunderstorms or Cbs is not necessarily lightning strikes, rather the turbulence within the cloud. Updrafts can reach up to 100mph within a severe thunderstorm, enough to tear any aircraft apart. That's why pilots should always avoid them.

Here's what the METARs mean...(in blue).

    0000GMT (30 mins before crash)
    OLBA 250000Z 31008KT 280V340 8000 VCTS FEW020CB SCT026 13/06 Q1014 NOSIG
Wind northwesterly, 8 knots. Visibility 8000m. Thunderstorm in the vicinity. 1-2 Oktas of Cumulonimbus clouds with bases at 2000ft. 5-7 oktas of cloud with bases at 2,600ft. Temp 13°C, Dewpoint 6°C

    0100GMT (30 mins aftr crash)
    OLBA 250100Z VRB03KT 4000 SHRA FEW020CB BKN026 12/07 Q1014 NOSIG
Wind Variable Direction, 3 knots. Visibility 4000m. Rain shower in the vicinity. 1-2 Oktas of Cumulonimbus clouds with bases at 2000ft. 5-7 oktas of cloud with bases at 2,600ft. Temp 12°C, Dewpoint 7°C

Regarding pilot error - if they did fly into a thunderstowm, then yes, they made an error. But we don't know what happened yet so no point speculating.

That's the quickest air accident investigation ever then! :D

I don't listen to what's been said on TV - I wait for the official report.
