Netbook Vs Notebook

I am looking to buy either a net book or a notebook and i cannot decide which. i'm hoping someone here would know more than me and be able to advise which one is best for me,

    my main uses would be:

Internet browsing (facebook, boards, sky sports centre, you tube, fantasy football) the reason i list these is because i'm curious as to whether or not the atom processor could handle these. i would be using score centre and fantasy football at the same time alot and youtube and facebook. (i would have about 4 tabs on firefox running at the same time usually)

word processing at times (word/excel) (also how do you put these on a netbook without a cd drive? would you need to buy an external? can i hook up the cd drive from my old laptop externally)

    storing photos/music

i do enjoy some old school pc games on disc's (age of the empires 2 ...etc) but i wouldn't mind if i couldn't play them or if i had to download them. i am not a pc gamer and other than solitaire/free cell...etc(are these on a netbook?) i do not play games.

battery life on the net book is appealing, and of course the small size,

im wondering if im ready to lose CD/DVD functions people keep telling me that soon these will become defunct anyway

i just can't decide which to go for? can anybody here help?

I would recommend a netbook for what you are going to be using OP. I have one for college and most of the time I would have Firefox, iTunes, Applications for programming and Word/Excel running at the same time.

In regards to getting Office programs on a netbook, there are a few ways. You could buy/download them online and install, use an external hard drive or mount the files on a virtual drive. If you have the files already on a laptop your best bet is to put them on a USB drive or HD.

If you're storing a lot of music, photos and movies you might want to think about buying an external HD (pretty cheap these days) or upgrading the internal HD as most netbooks only have 160/250 gb HDs. These days with so much software on the web there is not much need for an optical drive

If you have a computer with a cd/dvd drive, you can just share your cd drive over the network and access it through your netbook, its probably the easiest way of doing it.

You can always buy a cheap external DVD drive if you don't have a desktop PC.

Really though, when was the last time you needed an optical drive? They are a pointless use of power, weight and size in a portable device.

I have a little 10" Dell netbook and I get about 15hrs of battery life out of it with it's 2 x 6 cell batteries. For internet and media on the go it's a must.

In regards to games, most netbooks are fairly underpowered in this regard (they'll usually be able to handle 720p video though). But I have mine loaded with a bunch of emulators and it handles those fine. I've plenty of back catalogue 16bit games I never got around to when they where released first that I'm playing now for the first time.
