Where to buy a grinder

I'm looking to get a new grinder, presently have a blade chopper thing. At the moment I only make brewed coffee (fp, drip or moka pot, going to get an aeropress), no espresso. So I think that the Solis/Dualit is all I need for the moment.

Where abouts can you buy these in Ireland, or is it an internet purchase?

The Iberital MC2 from happydonkey is also just within budget, but is this overkill if I don't drink espresso? Is it a real pain to change grind from fp to moka pot?

I might get the espresso bug in the future, looking forward to trying 3fe and coffe angel when I am next in Dublin. I have never drunk an espresso that has made me go wow, maybe I don't like espresso. Or maybe I have never had an espresso made with good fresh beans (quite likely).

Brown Thomas sell the Dualit i think, I bought mine from Amazon UK.

It might be a better option than the MC2 if your changing grind sizes regularly. The MC2 is a pain to dial in.

I saw one in the kitchen section of Debenhams the other day (I know they're very pricey though). Realised when I got home I have one as part of the food processor I have....so glad I didn't buy it. :o

I don't think the Dualit is that much of an improvement over other crude grinders. FP, drip and moka all require a good even grind so don't think you can get away with a lesser grinder. The MC2 is a pain to alter but there others in around that price range, the fact that you don't make espresso doesn't mean you can 'cut corners'... FP, drip and moka are all very good ways to enjoy coffee so invest the best you can.

I had a parcel from hasbeans waiting for me when I got in this evening, that's very quick, only ordered on Thursday lunchtime (I live in the sticks). Broke my no coffee in the evening rule, just had a harrar in the frenchpress. I'm in heaven again. Years ago I was a student in the uk and got coffee posted from hillandvalley, moved back here in 2003, postage was prohibitive and couldn't find good beans in Ireland.

Back to grinder - what would be an easy to adjust good grinder in the same price range as the MC2? Do I need to spend a bit more? Now that I now that there is a reliable source of good beans, I am willing to invest. Been reading here and TMC, people seem to only talk about espresso grinders, and recommend/suggest the Dualit for everything else.

I'm not sure about the price range but the La Pavoni 'Jolly' will grind from talc to chips by turning the entire hopper. Easy peasy. I have one (bought here 2nd hand - nice one Mark!) and its a crackin' machine.

Don't think of FP or filter as second best, they aren't. It's probably the best way to get a feel for coffees. By the way 3FE on Middle Abbey street (foyer of Twisted Pepper) stocks a lot of Hasbean coffees and a few more besides.

OP - I'm actually going down the route of buying a second grinder myself right now! I'm using a Rocky now for over a year and as I've got more into it have started drinking a lot more pour over hario style and french presses.

I can't recommend the Rocky enough - its been a joy to work with though my difficulty now is the fact like yourself I want to be using it for different grind sizes and dialling it in isn't necessarily a pain just time consuming and a waste of beans. I'm not sure how many grinders out there will let you dial in different settings all that conveniently - some of the other boardsies may though. In the meantime you could consider buying a Hario Skerton from Karl at Coffee Angel and use it alongside a MC2 :P

Going to get the dualit and wait and see what comes up secondhand.

Incidentally, happydonkey are no longer shipping anything to Ireland

i've been sworn to secrecy, but i have heard there will be some new grinders entering the Irish / UK market. I can't divulge too much info, but they'll be an improvement on the aforementioned and within discussed price parameters.

i'll see if i can get an arrival date. Sorry i can't say more at this stage.

Sounds interesting. Everyone seems to be sold out of the dualit, expecting new stock in "2-5 weeks".

Is that what they said after you called them?

Very strange, I ordered from them only a month or two ago.

I sent them a mail and this was the single line reply :
    http://www.happydonkey.co.uk/uk-mainland-only.html

Anyone know of another place to get the MC2?

Guys. Sorry for the delay in coming back with info.

I've spoken with my contact regarding the grinders i'd mentioned above. He's bringing them in, but the bad news is it will still be a few months away.

I'll post once they do arrive should anyone be interested.

Anyone here want to take the opportunity to "upgrade" their MC2? I'm in the market for an MC2 (or another decent grinder at that price point) but with the change in policy at happydonkey I'm unable to source one at a good price
