hi. im looking to get into target shooting or hunting and im looking for information on how to get started. can anyone tell me how to apply for a license to own a .22 rifle or pistol. or can anyone give me any links or previous threads with information. thanks:)

To get a license you need to be a member of an authorised range or have permision from (minimum) 2 land owners or lastly be a member of a game club.

Go look at some rifles. Get a feel, ask questions of the dealer then bounce some ideas or questions of the lads here. Settle on a discipline. Hunting or target work. They are not mutually exclusive as most rifles can do both but some rifles are designed to do one function only.

Put a deposit on a rifle and get an FCA1 (download from http://www.garda.ie/Documents/User/fca1%20%28english%29.pdf or get from local station). Get all info necessary on the form (permissions, photo, medical info, firearm info, membership details, referees, etc). Choose whether you want/need a moderator and tick box as appropriate.

Don't forget to factor into your budget a safe, scope, rings, monts, carry case, cleaning gear, rests (for target work), bipod (for hunting), etc.

When you're happy with all details and your choice put in your application then sit back and wait.
