Has anyone come across a good woodstain or varnish that they have used on pine that comes up a fairly good colour match for walnut. I have a medium walnut floor and want to stain the steps, handrail and newel posts on the stairs and paint the rest of it off white. Any advice would be really welcome, have tried the Johnson Walnut but its coming out just very glossy brown.

Try some of the rustins walnut stain, maybe a couple of coats and then the clear varnish over that

yeah i've seen it in alot of shops. Just apply it with a small rag ,id say do a couple of coats and then let it dry for a few minutes and wipe everything with a clean rag to take off any excess
