Frozen Handbrake Ford Focus

Since the big freeze my car's handbrake hasn't released properly. When i drive it now you can tell that the handbrake is slightly engaged. Car stops on hills with handbrake off, taking off is hesitant...etc. Every now and again the car vibrates and makes noise like its going over rumble strips and the car doesnt pick up in fourth and fifth gear like it should.

Any advice on what is wrong/how i can repair it?

    Thanks for the help

I'd say the brake shoes are making contact with the drum. A bit of grease on the side of the shoes is all that should be needed. I'd get the abs sensor checked too as it can act up if the drum was incorrectly removed.

Also a handbrake cable adjustment might be needed as there could be moisture in it which would make it a bit rusty and difficult to disengage.

    Hopefully it's not this:
All models, 30/06/01 (build code: 1R).
    Problem
    Grinding noise from rear wheels.
Shaking from rear wheels or vibration from rear axle.
Intermittent flashing from ABS warning lamp.
    Cause
Damaged rear wheel bearings due to moisture entering the inside of the spindle carrier.
Damage to the bearing running surfaces.
    Remedy wheel bearing kit.

Can you feel a slackness / lightness as you start to pull up the handbrake lever followed by it taking up the pull on the cable? If so then the cable (s) sound to be seized and need to be replaced. Its not an uncommon problem.

don't drive the car if you can, you could be damaging the transmission and brake components.

could be something as simple as binding shoes to the inteior of he brake drums at the rea of the car. jack rear up, support with axle stands and remove wheels. Give drums a couple of sharp whacks with a club hammer, should free them if its simpl a temp related issue.
