Its been explained to us in Portmarnock, but tbh I didn't pay too much attention to it.

Just a heads up, if you don't renew in January it'll cost you €65-.

I'm not sure what Judo Ireland charges, but if you wish to compete and grade, or even train in an IJA affiliated club or competition you'll need IJA membership.

You could contact the IJA and ask I guess!.

I'll put it this way, membership of the British Judo association gets you personal injury cover in the event that you hurt yourself. I don't think the IJA provides any cover.

So far as I know thats included now, there's also one-one cover also.

ie if you applied an armbar (for instance) on me (highly unlikely :p ) and broke my arm/elbow your covered against me making a personal claim against you.

But really I don't know the finer details.

I know NOTHING about the workings of IJA but Boston I do know from working with the Irish Muaythai Council that it does take more money than people imagine to run an organisation and I don't think (don't know actually) IJA employ any full time officials so people are giving their time to get things done. I suppose its a matter of personal opinion if one thinks its worth it.

If that's on their site, its well hidden. I'd heard about the club liability insurance, but not the one on one cover.

I think ultimately you have to look at what the end user get out of being a member to justify paying the fee.

Honestly I think your questions are best directed at the IJA for a straight answer otherwise I fear the best you'll get here is 3rd or 4th hand, or worse, speculation.

Were you a member of the IJA last year?.

Nah. College didn't require it, and if they had I probably wouldn't have done judo due to the cost.

Maybe a good question to ask now, would be: how do judo associations in other countries manage to run with low/free competition entry/grading etc

Really I don't know specific details about how much it costs for a grading in France/Spain/Britain etc but the general consensus is that its a small amount to become a member, and then free gradings and cheap comp entry, or something along those lines. Basically a whole lot cheaper than it is here.

Is it just due to more government funding? Does the IJA receive much government funding?

There's a similar discussion over on judoforum.com atm.

If your club is a memeber of the IJA it should have recieved a copy of accounts for last years agm, you can ask your club secertary for them. It should provide a break down of expenditure that which should answer most of your questions.

Funding to Judo in ireland will not be what it could be until the two organisations kiss and make up. Improving the relationship with the Olympic council wouldn't hrt either.

Also it used to be the case that the clubs would get a cut of the grading fees back, this is either nolonger the case or hasn't happened in along time.

    Lol.

"Hey Boston as secretary, did you get any letter from the IJA detailing their accounts"
    "Nah, Boston, I got nothing".

    Lol.
