I'm doing a J1 to Santa Monica with a friend this summer, flights are booked but I'm wondering how difficult will it be to get a job? I've heard different things but I really don't have much money and I'll be depending on getting something. I'm 19 so am I too young to work in a bar...?

Rent is very expensive in that area. Two Irish bars in that area - O Briens and Finn McCools - no doubt you will see them(however at 19 i can't even see you getting served never mind work). Plenty of bars in the Venice area which is 15/20 min walk from Santa Monica. Try out the main promenade in Santa Monica too - lots of retail shops there who i presume take on summer staff, couple of cinemas there too.

A tough place to make it for your J1 really (however i like the fact you are trying something different to most J1ers). I hate to say it, but having spent time there i know what the craic - if your small and very pretty it will help over there getting work. I'd say try get some waitressing work in one of the restaurants along the beach in Venice.

Two pieces of advice - bring as much cash as you can and also try sort out work before going on the lash, then go on the lash! Unfort when i did my J1 i went on the lash first and then never got work!!GET WORK ASAP - then you can relax and enjoy yourself.
