What makes a guy, or girl, decide to propose?

You've been with your perfect partner for a while now. Everything's going well. Sure, you may have the odd disagreement, but who doesn't?
All in all, life is great. You would do anything to make each other happy. You know the real meaning of love. If they hurt, you hurt more, because you care about them more than they could care for themselves.
You would stand on your head for them, but you don't have to, because they love you so much they would never ask you to.
This can happen within a week, a month, a year or five years of being in a relationship.
So, what is it that makes you take the step of proposing?

Unless she decides you're not good enough anymore, in which case access to your children is questionable and any tax breaks you may have accumulated are offset by the ridiculous fact that in this day and age, you can say "I don't want the guy anymore, but I still want some of his paycheques"

well you'd have to know they wanted to or at least have broached the subject before with them to see what they might think in general. the amount of people that ask and get no's, that would be heart breaking to them! somebody might want it if they are having children for rights. i suppose what makes somebody think they want to get married is different for every person and just in general, a great love for their partner and length of the relationship. Im not opposed to it but i dont really feel too great an urge for it, or see the need. apart from certain rights etc and no children for me please!
