    Aer Lingus humanitarian flight

Meanwhile, Aer Lingus is to fly an A330 aircraft directly from Dublin to La Romana airport in the Dominican Republic on Friday to deliver emergency medical and food supplies to earthquake survivors in Haiti.

The decision to fly into La Romana airport instead of Port Au Prince in Haiti was taken due to safety concerns following today's severe aftershock.

The mission, which is being implemented in co-operation with the aid agency GOAL, will also bring 15 doctors and volunteers to Haiti.

Over 25 tonnes of aid will be loaded into the hold and the body of the plane and the aircraft will leave Dublin airport at 1pm on Friday, arriving in the Dominican Republic at 7pm local time.

It will be on the ground there for two hours to unload before returning to Dublin via Orlando.

Arrangements have been made with GOAL representatives in Haiti to ensure that, once unloaded, the supplies will get to those who need them as quickly as possible.

All crews and operations employees are volunteering their time and all airport and navigational charges have been waived by both the DAA and the IAA in order to facilitate this mission.

Fair play to all concerned especially as it's all volunteered, i hope this is just not a once off, and well done to doing away of all charges etc, oh and is anybody going to be around to get some snaps of her?

Great to see Aer Lingus doing this despite their dire financial situation.

    Hey guys,
Came across this link from the Irish thread at a.net.
Absolutely fantastic video made by EI covering the entirety of the flight to the Dominican Republic during the week. Even the fact alone that they uplifted 76.5 tonnes of fuel from DUB I thought really shows the effort made and cost which fell on EI to get the supplies over there.
Its a gesture which I wont forget next time I'm pricing up a EI vs FR flight;)
    Enjoy!

credit to EI, you wouldn't see Ryanair doing anything like this, even if they had the suitable aircraft.

I'm sorry, but you don't know that. You're just making a wild and baseless statement. Ryanair already do a lot for charity with the calendar, scratchcards and more. For all you know, Michael O'Leary could have made his own private donation towards the relief effort without broadcasting it all over the place.

That's not what this thread is about anyway. There was no need for you to throw in the Ryanair comment.

While I do agree with you in regards to public/private philantrophy (?) the comment isn't too far wrong. Its hard to imagine Ryanair Plc doing this, whatever MoL may do in his private life. The point here is that a public company decided to offer help to Goal, I'm sure they didn't alter their schedule to do so (unless anyone can confirm they affected flights to the US?) The staff voluntered, the airport/ATC charges were waived and isn't their fuel hedged in advance

And don't forget that to be a charity you only have to donate a small percentage of profits to charity (is it 5%?)

"Personally I don't like talking about the hours and hours of charity work I do each week, what about you Smashy?"

That's why I posted - because the thread was supposed to be about two organisations' decision to come together and do what they could to help in Haiti - this had nothing to do with Ryanair.

However, run_Forrest_run tried to bring up a completely new point, which was baseless, by claiming that Ryanair wouldn't do anything charitable. I was merely trying to stop this thread turning into another () Ryanair-bashing one.

Look, whatever about EI vs FR, this makes me proud to have EI as the national carrier and very happy that on my next return flight to London I'm giving my business to EI.

If every public company and its staff acted like this the world would be a better place. Hats off to you EI.

FYI - AerLingus are not 'the national carrier' they are a public company, owned and answerable to its shareholders.

The Haiti run was a very nice gesture by someone somewhere in AerLingus that had the balls to authorise it and I am sure the goodwill created will stand to AerLingus

I will book a flight by the weekend as a thank you.

Great video, and fair play to Aer Lingus for putting themselves out there to help GOAL.

I far prefer Aer Lingus to Ryanair, but that's just a personal preference, for some people saving a few quid/Money is more important than anything.

Well done Aer Lingus and Goal
