Hi there, quick question. My wife and I are having a baby and we wanted to use both our last names for their last name (double barrelled last name with a hyphen). Is this possible to do this legally in Ireland? Does anyone know for sure?

    Thanks for your help.

Yes, you can chose either or both names in any order.

    Details here.

We did "double barrel, hyphenated" with our two sons...

    The act also allows
"such other name as may be requested by both of the parents
or by one of them if the other parent is dead or, after
reasonable efforts to do so have been made, cannot be
contacted (if an tArd-Chla´raitheoir or an officer of an
tArd-Chla´raitheoir duly authorised by him or her in that
behalf or a Superintendent Registrar is satisfied that the
circumstances warrant it and he or she agrees to the
    request)."

Which would allow one to name up a surname, but the register would have to agree.

what if your child has a child and that child has a child and then that child has a child and so on and each time the parents decided to do as you have done. by the end of it your great grandchild will have to spend half an hour introducing itself. its womens lib. bullsh1t. grow up

Well without double-barrelled names all children born out of wedlock will be named after the mother, as in Irish law the mother has automatic guardianship of the children and it is up to the father to fight for inclusion.

Double-barreled is not perfect but it works.

OK so, what if a couple have too kids and because of long enough surnames decide to go with the father's name. Now 2 years later the father is no longer in the picture.

Now the mother wants the children to change their surnames to her surname. Are they too young for deed poll?

The baby takes the man's last name, don't be the bitch in your relationship tell your wife get back in the kitchen and let you worry about the name calling.

Who decides which names get culled?
