I have a mesh aerial which was used to get MMDS from Chorus/UPC. I've cancelled my subscription with them.
Will I need to get a new aerial instead of the mesh aerial in order to pick up DTT. (I have an MPEG 4 tv) or will i need a different aerial?

You will need a standard uhf aerial to recieve the new dtt service in Ireland when it is fully launched. Also im not too sure weather we will all require some specific type of Mpeg 4 reciever or indeed as in your case a Tv with a built in Freeview Mpeg 4 tuner. With Rte's past endevours i.e. encrpting their channels on SKY i wouldnt be surprised.

I hope they do, I don't want it there if it's no use to me.

MPEG 4 capable receiver required. It will not be encrypted.

They usually don't bother, cost more to take it down than than it worth.

The MMDS antenna's designed to pick up higher frequencies than UHF, you'd need a proper UHF antenna for Digital Terrestrial TV.

The MMDS antenna's pretty much useless, other than for use with 2.5ghz services.

Any idea when this will happen?

I have searched high and low, but can't seem to find any info other than who have received the green light from the BCC?

Ireland is so far behind in the DTT development compared to many other European countries where analogue is no longer available...

    This from http://rtenl.ie/dtt.htm
Television is going digital. RTÉNL is rolling out a national DTT transmission system in preparation for the introduction of the new service.

There is no definitive launch date for a DTT service in Ireland as yet. This is a matter for RTÉ (www.rte.ie) and the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (www.bci.ie) to determine.

Judging by the speed RTE is going at I'd say around 2020.:D

Well apparently we're one of the last countries in the entire EU and EEA to roll this stuff out.

Once again, an embarassing state of under-achievement for the Irish Public Service.

I mean, we had a massive economic boom, huge potential ad revenues etc etc and feet were dragged, tried and tested technologies put on seemingly incomprehensibly long trial periods etc

It's like the inability of CIE & the RPA to get integrated ticketing to work ... complete incompetence and lack of ability to do anything.

When it does eventually come are they planning on having a HD channel?

When it does eventually come are they planning on having a HD channel?

Once ASO is complete RTÉ have indicated that the second RTÉ mux may carry HD channels
"It is likely that all (main) TV channels will migrate to HD over the coming years and therefore the additional two multiplexes in Ireland will have to be commissioned into use."

RTÉ response to the ComReg Digital Dividend Consultation - May 2009
A further four National MUXES would become available post 2012: one for PSB (primarily High Definition) and one for the use of non-PSB Channels together with two national MUXES which it is understood may be utilised for new distribution and communications technologies, such as DVBH for example.
