What keeps a relationship going? What are the vital ingredients? How do I make sure this one lasts?

    First time long term relationship!

    Thanks!

If we had the answers to that there would never be any divorces!

For me at least (and it differs from person to person) ..... a long lasting relationship needs the following, and it's an ethos I try to adhere to myself personally:

    Loyalty, Passion, Honesty, Communication, Respect.

If any relationship can maintain these five things then I would say it's a healthy one. They cover a lot of situations encountered in many partnerships.

After a few failed relationships I'm now in a 2 year one that couldn't be going better, and there are a few big differences.

For me it's not letting go of thoese little things that you've always done together that make your relationship special. My bf and I still put time aside for just the two of us, a massage, a few candles, a trip to the movies etc. It's also making sure that neither party ever feels taken for granted.

My partner and I make a point of letting each other know how we feel, what we're thinking, if we have a bone to pick etc. We don't let things fester if we get on each other's nerves and we never EVER raise our voices or curse at each other. Mainly I think it's being each other's best friend, without friendship, it all goes out the window.
