Redrilling shoes?

    Hi -

I got a nice new pair of Mavic road shoes. I tried them on the turbo and found that they didn't have the same 'push' as my Nike ones. The Mavic are a larger size ( the Nike were a bit small when I got them )

I pushed the cleat as far towards the middle as I was able to, but still don't feel quite right. I'd say it should be about 1cm lower towards the middle.

I was thinking about buying thick insoles that would push my foot forward into the shoes, ( there is room ) therefore, making the cleat feels better under my foot, or ... redrilling the shoe.

Has anyone every done that? or do you guys have any idea?

    Thanks

This or this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but discusses some of the issues.

Your solution would be less drastic. Be wary of drilling holes too close to the existing ones. In my experience of DIY this will cause your shelves to fall down.

I read the Joe Friel blog on the issue. I am not trying to have the cleat in the centre of the shoe.

I was also thinking of making the cleat hole bigger so I can pull it lower?

The Giova - The smallest ladies is 4.5 ... which is a bit big I am only a 3.5/4 in normal shoes.

Maybe give them a few weeks before modifying them. You might get used to them. I bought a new pair a few weeks ago and I'm still breaking them in.

Nice shoes Caroline, did you buy them from CRC?

I really want the Mavic Zxellium ever since El Tonto expressed an interest. Yellow is the new white.

One of the guys in our club has them. Let's just say that they stand out!

Mum's xmas present - bought them at the LBS in Biarritz :)
You really have to be good to pull of the yellow ones though. They scream 'try to catch me if you can'.

@Ramm they're a bit lose, so I guess I will try to add good insoles 1st.

Well that rules El Tonto out so, maybe we should all chip in and get Mockler a pair.

I have drilled holes in carbon shoes.
It works ok, cleat changing becomes tricky as there is usually a seat for the nut (which doesn’t look like a standard nut) where the original hole was that stops it turning as you screw the cleat in.
It is more awkward to do it with a newly drilled hole. Now that I think of it, it is probably a good idea to glue the 'nut' in place to stop it turning as you screw the cleat in.

The new Mavic range must be the best looking shoes out there at the moment. But yellow...is just a liitle too much

From the photo, I would suspect that making the cleat hole bigger would lose you the float.

Assuming all three bolts would be fully forward when mounted to your shoe, you could re-drill at the back end of the slots. That should give you enough distance from the old holes for strength and you'll be able to shift the cleats backwards.

I don't know what pedals you use, but I know that speedplays have an adaptor plate that allows for a more rearward positioning. I don't know if other pedals have anything equivalent.

I don't use speedplays myself, I just remembered reading about this on cyclingnews.com.

Could you not just try padding out the heel cup to push your foot further forward in the shoe. I'm sure you can get adhesive pads in the chemist for using when shoes rub on the heels?

I read that too, but I use Shinano road pedals. Speedplay ae a bit expensive ... Had a good google around and Shimano don't seem to have an equivalent.

I also thought of that .. I think i will try a few DIY methods
    including insoles etc.
