    Hi guys,

My Dad is a musician and has been doing studio work for years. Hes about to play catch up in this digital age and get himself a Mac and Pro Tools 8.

This question has probably been asked here before a million times but could yee help me help him choose a suitable Mac.

Basically something that he will get 3+ years out of and will still be able to handle the next version of pro tools that comes out.

hed rather a Macbook but a desktop mac is also a possibility. Hes probably better off getting a mac desktop eh, for the power/ price.

What would he need to be spending? many thanks

    Hi Woodsdenis,

It would be top of the range version which I presume is HD

Well an LE system could be anywhere between 2-6 K depending on computer
and interface. LE will run on any current MAC laptop, Imac or Macpro

a HD2 system which is really the minimum must be 15k+.

If HD is what you are after you have to use a MAC Pro because you need to use the expansion slots for the HD cards. Any computer will be out of date in 18 months and it is more than likely that HD could be replaced by then. There
is no such thing as longevity in this business I am afraid.:(

    Hi,

I used a refurb'd Powerbook and I can get a full 24 Tracks with tons of plugin using a 002r. Its still going strong.

I would buy a imac refurb to say some money. Any of the models out nowadays fitted with the extra Ram(Do not buy ram from Apple, its far to expensive) would do the job.

Refurb macs are going for 1200-1400 for some of the latest 27" versions.

After that its your interface. I'd not bother going for the Pro Tools HD, the LE and one of those Macs would do most small studio setup's.

The range of interfaces is large enough, cause you can go for Digi Design stuff or some of the lesser M-Audio stuff. The M-Box is a good starter but its over priced for the features it comes with. You could easliy do all this for less than 2k.
