    Dia Daoibh,

Im new to the forum, ive practiced Tae Kwon-do for 3 yrs, but my club moved location and the numbers dropped. Ive been out of practice for about 2 years now and want to get back into martial arts. Id like to try an art which has various aspects, striking, throws, joint locks grappling etc (I found Tae Kwon-do was usefull but as it is heavily kick based i found it limited in close quarters) Any one have any suggestions for an art ? Ive read up a bit on tarditional JJ and Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu and was wondering if anyone has any experience or opinions on either of these. Its primarily for self defence.

    Go raibh maith agaibh

Many will say that MMA involves all those things, but I get the feeling you wish to stay on the Tradition Martial Arts side of things.

    Where are you in Dublin?.

Hapkido definitely fits that description.... I'm trying to campaign for a club to be established properly in Dublin.

It has Strikes, Punches, Kicks, Throws, Locks and nerve attacks...

Number one rule when picking a place to train is to pick something that's available, which rules out Hapkido.

Number two rule, if you want to be able to pull off any of the moves you learn, you'll have to practice them against a fully resisting opponent who's trying their best to perform similar moves on you. If you do go down the traditional martial arts route, make sure you go with a place that does proper sparing.

Im right in the city centre, bout 15 mins from O'Connell st. I wouldnt mind giving MMA a go but i would like to stick more to the trad side. A friend mentioned Hapkido to me once but i haven come across any clubs in Dublin

Kokoro MMA is based on Gaelic Street, Off North Strand, only up the road from Connolly Station. Take a look at www.mmaireland.com

To the OP...Check www.bujinkan.ie for available clubs. The events page lists various beginners courses starting in January and if you missed the first class it's no problem to join in a bit late. Also, most clubs take beginners at any time as well. Just contact the clubs first.

Best advice is to go down, watch a class, and ask lots of questions.

PS... Bujinkan is the most all-roundest I've experienced in terms of weapons and use of the body.....strikes, throws, locks and weapons are fully integrated into a unified system. Most classical Japanese jujutsu schools are like this and Bujinkan is made from 9 of these.

It's ridiculous isn't it that Hapkido isn't as widely available...

There is a class in Bray which you can get to via the Dart, but for most of Dublin that's not possible.

There is a Karate Club just outside of Dublin Airport which is Wado Ryu which I might look into.....

MMA is what you're looking for if you're really interested in learning an all-round art (provided you want it to be functional).

If you're intent on sticking to more traditional martial arts though, I imagine there are loads of TKD clubs in the city centre and you could add something like judo or wrestling too for some grappling.

    Le meas,
    John
