Weird TV License Question...

A TV License Inspector called to the door recently. I don't have a TV but I received a letter saying that I'd failed to buy a TV license and I needed to do so or I would be summoned.

Has anyone been in this situation before?

What happens if an inspector mistakenly notes that you have a TV when you don't?

Is there any method of appeal?

Any and all help is appreciated.

you should have asked him in for a look. not many people dont have a tv . you wont get a fine for somthing you dont have. i worked for a family who didnt have one 20yrs ago , anytime an enspecter came around i had to show him around cos he thought they were fibben. so dont you get worried.

Yeah, I've had an inspector come into my last apartment and take a look around.

But I think there might have been some confusion because I was talking to this guy about watching TV on my laptop.

Do you know if in this scenario they will send around another inspector? Because in that case they are welcome to come in.

My only concern is that, a) they won't believe me and I'll eventually get summoned, and b) either way, I'll be hounded by letters for the remainder of my sad days.

i kept getting these letters even though i had a licence. well have the kettle boiled just incase. what you do is when you get one again is burn it if you have an open fire and if you dont just rip it up. how often do inspectors come around to you? in the county galway ive only seen one in the last 3yrs.its are costing an post alot to send them to every one in eire. did he read your personal stuff on your laptop?

They usually go by if any cable is going into the house/apartment. You should call them up and ask for an inspector to call out. It will put your mind at ease. I'm sure they get lots claiming to have no TV.
Technically a licence is required for an aparatus capable of receiving a TV broadcast signal. TV on the PC is okay for now....matter of time though.

They generate a list of all households NOT holding a TV license in a particular area - then call around. The really annoying thing about this is I was busy when the guy called and wasn't going to open the door in the first place. But I relented.

I guess all I can do is tell them there's been a mistake. If they don't believe me (which they won't; sure aren't we all a bunch of scroungers peddling "excuses"!?!) then I can invite an inspector around and see where it goes from there.

    Thanks for all your comments.
