medical card + line rental - pensioner

a neighbor of mine is a pensioner, he has the usual free phone line rental for oaps, and also has a medical card, which pays for his prescription.

anytime his tv or phone is acting up he rings me to sort it out, so he rang me the other day and said UPC sales department phoned him and asked him to get rid of eircom phone and switch to upc, ...they said that his free line rental allowance of €25 instead of going to eircom would be transferred into his bank account.

    is this true ?

if true, would this €25 then be counted towards his weekly income assessment, as its technically becoming a personal payment rather than an allowance.

i dont know his income (and would rather not ask) ...but i dont want to recommend him to take the upc phone deal, only to find out that the €25 pushes him over the medical card income limit, which moves him on to the drug payment scheme, costing him €120 for his prescription. net loss €95  lol

the 25 is part of his home benefit package and will not affect his medical card.

If by chance he's over 70, the then the limit for his medical card would be 700 yoyos. So the chances are that there's no hope of the 25 euro damaging his (financial) health.

Instead of getting the free rental he is getting the €25 paid into his bank accounts to cover credit for a mobile phone. I don't think this happens automatically, he will probably have to call sligo and make sure they know his intentions.

I doubt NTL will do it for him!
