    Hi,

Basically I want to start developing on a Mac but with a big screen. I was thinking of getting a laptop and remoting into that from my Windows XP box that has dual screens.

This way i'll be running 2 OS's simultaneously on my big screens but both on dedicated computers?

Just wondering does Mac have a remote desktop feature will up/down scale the host desktop to the clients resolution? Something similar to Windows RDP?

    Thanks..

    It uses VNC.

Apple's Remote Desktop Software is the best. But it costs.

If you have 2 computers and 2 screens, then you could use synergy to share a single keybaord and mouse

I must check out Apples Remote Desktop if its as good as you say. I'm pretty used to MS RDP now so I don't think VNC would cut it..

    My setup is as follows:
desktop w/ 2 screens. - Windows XP on this.
laptop w/ 1 screen. - Mac on this.

I already use synergy and it's an amazing piece of kit but the thing is I want to develop on my big screen, not the laptop. I also want to have access to my Windows XP on the big screen also but have dedicated hardware for each.

After seeing your other posts, I don't think Remote Desktop is what you're after.

    Still. Here are the pics!

Thanks for going to the effort of doing that?

All I really want is fulscreen Mac on my Windows box..

The problem I have with VNC is that it doesn't upscale to larger resolutions on the client machine like MS RDP does.

Well there's no Windows->Mac equivalent of MS RDP I don't think.

I may be wrong though! I tend to avoid Windoze like it's a large basket of rats carrying plague.

You can use Microsoft RDP on os x, there's a version available I use it everyday to remote into our DC I then use ARD for remoting into the macs, but I'm sorry it begs the question, granted you have two large screens on your xp box, why not hook one screen up to your laptop and extend the desktop, surely that would be the most cost effective solution, but any free VNC program will work on both mac and PC.

Why not just use a Mini DVI - VGA/HDMI cable to connect your macbook to one of your monitors?

Trying to develop via RD is a painful experience, I'd just connect the laptop to one of the screens

I was wondering about that ok.. I suppose I could just hook up to one of the inputs and switch source to toggle between windows and mac.

But Zas, logmein is fine for remoting (over distance) but when the laptop is beside you it's a bit pointless having both machines sending and receiving key inputs/screen shots to and from each other via a remote server somewhere overseas, makes no sense. At least with ARD/RDC on a local network it's pretty speedy I use ARD and now in leopard screen sharing to check on macs upstairs to save me having to get off me ass and go up and check on them, I know, lazy sod.

Too right, if developing over RDP/ARD is painful then Logmein etc must be out of the question altogether..

I am surprised nobody has mentioned the infamous OpenSSH yet: here
You won't beat the good old Unix shell when dealing with remote machines.

And contrary to what has been said earlier, partial support for Microshaft RDP exists and is quite common on Linux machines: http://www.rdesktop.org/
