Gearbox test

    Imagine you’d had a Ducato gearbox reconditioned and you were still hearing bearing type noises/ chatter.

    Imagine if your gearbox guy had reported thrust bearing wear manifested by a forward and back motion on the flywheel/ crank. Imagine he then blamed all of the noise/ chatter on this wear but you didn’t think it were so.

    Imagine if you got the second opinion of your regular mechanic who performed a test on the gearbox to confirm that the noise was there and not elsewhere. What if he drove the van down a gentle slope at maybe 20-30km/h and switched the engine off. What if the noise was still there when the engine was switched off and the van was in gear (with or without the clutch pressed)?

    Surely that tells you it must be the gearbox, right?

    with the engine off (and hence the flywheel not turning) the only way the van can roll down a hill is in neutral.

    so any noises have to come from the gearbox ...or the brakes, the CV joints, the wheel bearings

    hold, going down a hill, engine off, IN GEAR........don't think so...engine braking would stop you in your tracks....

    I think you mean going down a hill, in neutral, engine off, with & without the clutch pressed, in which case.............actually, no....

    Engine off, IN GEAR, (ignoring it trying to stop you, for a minute..)...your crank would still turn, so any crank/flywheel noise could still be the culprit.

    Engine off, IN NEUTRAL, clutch pedal pressed, would send you in the direction of the gearbox.....

    Engine off, IN NEUTRAL, clutch pedal NOT pressed, would merely might add clutch/DMF to the potential gearbox issue.

    But there again, it's very early in the a.m......

    I mean you can hear noise when

    a) trundling down the hill with the clutch pressed, selecting various gears.

    b) with the clutch out, in neutral

    It's not a DMF, btw and it had a brand new clutch kit into the deal.

    Did you ever look up "gear lash"? Its a horrible noise thats in virtually all gear boxes that you generally only hear if you switch to a lightweight flywheel or your original original FW was heat damaged (like mine) via a burnt clutch.

    Gear Lash makes your car sound like a diesel tractor.
    You can hear it idling in neutral with the clutch out (push it in and you engage the FW and noise goes away) and also in whatever gear on your car is a 1:1 ratio (ie 5th).

    The noise is generally always there (gearbox and driveline noise) but is canceled out by a (balanced) FW via harmonisation. Its well documented in the US and online, but virtually no mechanic here believes me. I solved (masked really) this issue on my own car by putting in a heavier weight (Redline MT-90) Gearbox Oil, the thicker oil naturally deadens the 'boxes noise and as its fully synth and generally really good doesnt negatively affect cold start shifting etc.

    Even when I brought the car back to the mechanic and he commented "wow the gearbox noise is gone, how?" he still didnt quite believe me!
