Classmate's web stalker jailed for only 16 weeks!

A man who stalked a former school classmate and Googled her 40,000 times in a year has been sentenced to 16 weeks in prison.

Elliot Fogel, 34, stored a satellite map of victim Claire Waxman's home and her wedding photos on his computer.

"This is an incredibly ill and obsessed man who won't go away, refuses to leave me and my family alone and you have to question his intentions," Mrs Waxman, a mother-of-two, told Sky News.
"I know the statistics for stalkers, I know where it often leads ... it's horrible to think about it."

In a 16-page, written impact statement to the court Mrs Waxman described seven years of harassment during which she suffered a miscarriage, an eating disorder, sleepless nights and was forced to move home five times.
She said Fogel anonymously sent her flowers, cards, and emails, made late-night phone calls, broke into her car and visited her home.

He also went to the nursery school used by one of her children, she said.
Fogel and Mrs Waxman were A-level students at Oaklands College in St Albans in the early 1990s.

She said she barely spoke to him, but he would follow her around college and jog behind her car.

She did not hear from him for another 10 years, when he began sending her anonymous emails and turned up at her office in north London.
Initially, Fogel was given two police warnings, then he was arrested and convicted of harassment.

Twice he has breached an indefinite restraining order for which he was given a suspended jail sentence and ordered to pay her £5,000.

Mrs Waxman, 33, insists she has been let down by the courts and called for Fogel to be jailed and given psychiatric help, prior to his sentencing.
"We are considering emigrating because the system has failed me many times," she said.
"That to me is the saddest thing because we have all our family and friends here and I don't feel I should have to leave."

Fogel told Sky News: "I admit sending her flowers and emails and asking for a date, but that was before I knew she was married.
"I know I've admitted breaching the restraining order, but I haven't tried to contact her.

"I was simply doing computer searches and I think she was doing the same on me. She now blames me for everything that goes wrong in her life."

Clearly something wrong with him but that doesn't mean he should only get this light sentence.

Would you have going down the legal route? I doubt I would have.

I think the judge just arbitrarily decided to link the number of weeks he sentenced him for to the number of pages in her victim impact statement.

    She should've written more.

It's her own fault for being lazy.

you are a stalker if you follow someone for more than two blocks.

    Elliot Fogel, 34,

"Occupation. Administrator on popular internet discussion forum"

    ^^
Has to be. I see no other use for a name like that.

His internet handle would be "elfog" or "fog"

Kids would look up to him.

Did she 'friend' him on Facebook at any stage?

If so it'll give me handy and unfounded ammunition against Facebook for a good rant at my co-workers on my coffee break. That annoying windbag Sharon loves Facebook so I might throw it in her face. :)

Googled her 40,000 times in a year
They say that figure like it's a lot. Why, that's only around 100 times a day!

He googles her over 112 times a day... so, assuming he sleeps for about 7 hours a day, that's 6.6 times per hour. i.e. once or so every ten minutes.

wtf that must be boring. How many times can her google results change?

It must be a typo - replace with "ogled" and it makes a lot more sense.

I don't believe someone would Google a person 100 times a day for a year.

Seems like a bulls**t investigation to me.

    i was thinking the same...

jail is a bit harsh, though i suppose he did break his restraining orders and "broke" into her car, they are crimes really.

Unless he was using the google search to throw up a link to her facebook/bebo. Though it would have been more efficient if he used favourites. That said it still seems too excessive to be true.

16 weeks is a long sentence....in comparison to what happened to the guy who stalked me when I was 13.

After a dispute between my mum and neighbourhood woman, the womans husband decided to follow me everywhere. He even waited outside school and walked 5 feet behind me for the whole 2 miles back to my house making threats to me.

After weeks of this intimidation and stalking, he got a warning from the Gardai and was let off. Thankfully he did stop.

Sending this deranged poor fukcer to jail does'nt solve the issue. No doubt he'll come out even more fcuked in the head once someone makes him his bitch and he has drug issues. He should be getting psychiatric help, not jail time.

Well if stalkers were rational people then they wouldn't be stalkers! :D

He was trying to intimidate the whole family. I just got the 'follow you everywhere' treatment. I don't think he liked what I said about his wife.

She said she barely spoke to him, but he would follow her around college and jog behind her car.

Hmm...either he was a very fast jogger or she was a very slow driver.

Oh I think it is awful, I have had my run in with people over the internet. About 2 and a half years ago me, my boyfriend and his ex girlfriend were getting harassed all the time. Anythime I logged on to my Facebook or bebo this guy would be mailing me. They would then make copies of all our social network accounts and then kept trying to break into our email addresses.

Long story short the stalker managed to hack my boyfriends and his ex girlfriends MSN and my facebook, eventually his ex started accusing me and my boyfriend of doing it and they fell out. Since then we had a few of the same problems... my fella's bebo, my old email accounts have been hacked stuff like that. I am not sure if anything has been happening with his ex haven't spoken to her since then.

Right now I just want to get on with my life and pretend none of this stuff ever happend and hopefully it doesn't happen again it was terrible to go through.

I changed my password after he broke into my facebook, what I didn't realise is that this person was trying to hack our email accounts by clicking on the forgot password link and trying to guess the answer to the question. It worked on a very old email I never used and when they couldn't figure out the answer to my new email they started clicking on the link to send a password reset link to the alternative email, they must of thought that it was set up to my old email. When I checked my alternative email I had 12 password reset links and over the next few days got maybe 50 more. Believe me I have learned how to protect my accounts since the first incident. :D

I got word over Christmas that my previous employer has been Googling me. It does actually make you feel sick. They're probably reading this right now

I've set up a few traps on the net now and will spot it in log files if they do it again and I will ask them for an explanation if it happens once more. You can't be too careful about stalkers out there.

How exactly can you set a trap to see if someone has been Googling you?

You can hide your name in random pages on websites/blogs you have access to, then keep an eye on your webalizer/awstats/apache logs to see what searches brought people to those pages and their ip addresses.
