Good weekend to see where my game was at I must say!

Castleknock on Saturday, 76 gross off 1 handicap. Putting usually the strong part of my game let me down badly though, 37 whacks with the wand. 14 out of 18 greens was encouraging though!

Then on to The Montgomerie in Carton on Sunday where my long game deserted me and putting remained shocking for an 83. No complaints about the greens on either course though, particularly Carton.

Anyhoo, decent start to the year, at least in Castleknock. Really enjoyed both rounds and looking forward to next week for more of the same!

    Short game surprisingly good.

Last 7 holes was a lip out and a shank away from having 7 3's in a row.
Worked hard on swing this winter before the cold spell and I really feel like im swinging it solid. If I can maintain my putting of the last couple of summers I reckon I could achieve my goals for the year and more. Feeling Super confident about golf recently and my general play since september has been good.

    Roll on the summer!

Home course 15 hole s/ford club singles comp. Par 59 CSS n/c.
    24 pts off 8.

The first time I've picked up a club in about 6 weeks and was very rusty for the first 5/6 holes (blocked and hooked drives been the main culprits), I managed to steady the ship for the back nine and scored 18 pts, considering that the putter was extremely cold (1/6 putts made inside 5 feet), it wasn't the worst start to 2010, roll on the spring and warmer clims.

My latest trend on my last 2 and only 2 rounds since October, is to start really well because I am concentrating well for the 1st few holes (was only +2 for the first 5 holes) which is out of a healthy fear of not being able to hit the ball well. I think this fear is as a result of a prolonged absence from playing. Then I become complacent for the middle of the round once I realise I am playing well, stop concentrating and score poorly as a result. Then I resolve to try to concentrate again and finish strongly.

Now I just need to sort out the concentration lapses. I have only played about 2 rounds ever where I didn't 'go missing' at some point during a round. Is this normal? I guess it's some comfort to know that when I put my mind to it I can play well. & it is Winter though after all so I won't worry about that till late Feb early March.

Played Gowran on Sunday which was a lovely day after the fog lifted.
Driving at The European was magic but on Sunday it was rubbish.
Irons last week were rubbish but were decent on Sunday.
    32 points off 4
5/13 fairways (2 drives into water, 1 lost in gorse and 1 unplayable back to the tee job)
    8/18 greens
    30 putts
Got the first birdie of the year on the 7th, followed it up with one on 8, shaved the 9th, 3 putted 10 and birdied 11.
Great to get out but not so great to start 2010 with the same Jeckyll and Hyde golf I used to play in '09... you'd think that something like that would magically correct itself over the winter break :)

Lulled into a false sense of security by a reasonable round last w/e in Shannon (38 points - taking into account playing first three holes twice). Couldn't credit how poorly I played last Friday. Cobwebs? Seemed like I was cocooned in spider web such was the hopeless, impotent nature of my swing. Always disappointing to have a day like that. I'm hoping that small errors which have crept in over the long break are merely having an exaggerated effect and that I can get back on course with some basic input over the next few weeks. On a positive note, my putting was ok but then again I have almost being doing nothing else over the winter break bar practising putting. My chipping around the green was also reasonable ... it was just getting to 'around the green' that was the problem!!

    Oh my god. Shocking stuff.

Played my first game this year. First game since early December (which was my only game of the winter, and I played great and won the comp).

It was a V-Par competition and I was -5 after the front 9 (with only 7 holes open). Terrible terrible short game. My long game was okay.
Back 9 was a bit better, only -1...still, left a ton of shots on the putting green.
Very disappointed though, need to get some practice in.

Looks pretty good right ? But consider this. I have never broken 90 (92 was closest and that was a long time ago). I have never even broken 100 on my home course (only joined last summer and it is pretty long).
Never played to a handicap of 18 points wise.
So first game of the new year and I go and do that. Just madness this game :D

Driving long and solid all day. Ball striking as good as its ever been.
Putter red-hot - everything inside 7-8 went down (and trust me when I say that is huge for me)
I kep thinking that this has to go wrong at some stage as I went around - but I tried to stay in the moment and focus on each shot and not the score or points I was making. Got 6 pars on back 9 including 4 straight to finish.
Scratched 13 after fecking up my drive and topping my second but recovered to par next - which is what I typically do not do.
Some feeling coming off last and totting up points. Floated for a whole week. :)

And this weekend went and played on a friends home course.
Brutal start and only ended up with 26 points. Fairways out of play which didn't help. And I could not read the speed of the greens. 5 times I hit the cup but ball going too quick and popped out.
So even though big difference in score the fundamentals still seem to be there which is great.
All I have to do now is try and get consistent !!

Played in a Fourball this morning with another 4 handicapper.
We had 43 points off 3/4 handicap. He had a 1 under 70, I had an even par 71.

So my singles card would have been 40 points.
    6/13 fairways
    11/18 greens
    28 putts

Only little disappointment was being -1 in the middle of the 15th fairway and dropping a shot but still a promising day.

Played yesterday for the first time in just over 2 months. 15 holes in play. 10 pars, 5 bogeys and 29 points. Missed a couple of short putts and had a 3 putt thrown in for good measure. Booking in for a lesson this week as I wasn't hitting the ball that well. Only 2 fairways hit and 1 drive that I was happy with. Was playing great golf before my break so need to find that form before season proper starts.

Your 86 is 19 over the SSS of 67 so this is the one that will determine the handicap you get.
If you had any 'big' numbers on that card, they will be reduced down to a double bogey so if you had a couple of triple bogeys they would be reduced down to doubles so your 19 over would become 17 over and you might expect a 16.4 handicap ;)
All depends on the card you handed in.

Last Saturday was my third game in 4 weeks since early November and I seem to have found an extra 10 yards off the tee since starting back. Hitting them long and straight. Absolutely delighted. Nearly drove our par 4 15th albeit wind assisted. I have a tendency to sway the hips during impact/follow through but am making a conscious effort to snap the right hip at impact now. This seems to do away with the swaying. Long may it continue. Short game not up to scratch as a lot of my pitches are coming up short of the pin but that side will come.

In saying that I had 11 pars today and was very unlucky to not have a few birdies. 5 double bogeys killed me and the two bogeys should have been pars. Short game was the cause of the 5 double bogeys so gotta work on that.

    Course Par:71
    Comp: Practice

Happy with todays game. As everyone is aware its been a hard start to the year with bad weather and tough conditions so lack of practice has affected everybody. Played in garden trophy yesterday and had played solid golf but just felt it wasnt consistant enough so wanted to put things right today. Overall I had 11 pars, 4 bogeys, 1 double bogey and 2 birdies. Didnt hit nearly enough greens today but my driving and putting was excellent. Total putts for my round was 26 but with a total of ten 1 putt holes and 8 2 putt holes, great that I didnt have any 3 putts !!

All in all very happy with my game considering the lack of practice and games so lots of room for improvement with more practice !!
